July 7, 2021: Waiting to Win

I thought getting back to Chicago would do the trick, after all, the last time the Cubs had won a game was the night we got back from Vegas, the combined no-hitter in LA, remember? Yeah, how crazy is that. I had been home from Vegas, back to work, back on vacation, and back again… and the Cubs hadn’t won a single game!!! What the hell man? Surely, this Tuesday night against Philly, as we were coming back into the city limits, the Cubs would win again right???

Tuesday night would be the final loss of the Cubs 11 game losing streak. Do I really have to go over what happened in those games? I’m just kind of stunned I guess. The last time the Cubs had won a game they were in first place… 11 losses later, not so much. How the hell does this happen? I get the ups and down over a 162 game season; I’ve been on that roller coaster ride many times. But the downs are not usually this bad… and the timing of it all, with the core not signed, with the trade deadline coming up… it just sucks.

I had believed, and part of me still does believe, that this Cubs team could make the playoffs. Maybe not a viable option in another division, but in the NL Central… yes, heck yes the Cubs could win it. Although during this ice cold stretch for the Cubs, the Brewers would ride one of their ups, and extend a pretty decent lead in the division, and oh yeah, the Reds would pass us up too, the season is not over, contrary to a lot of opinions I read. Just as easy as the Cubs lost 11 straight, they could win 11 straight, right? Right???

The 11 straight losses would come up short of the all-time Cubs losing streak of 14 games in 1997. Oh yeah, those 14 games were the first 14 games of the season! Somehow I have blocked that out of my memory. There were three 13 game losing streaks, three 12 game losing streaks, and now, four 11 game losing streaks. Losing, losing, losing… ugh! The Cubs did finish above 500 in 1970, the year where they had one of their 12 game streaks. Can this Cubs team do the same?

I certainly think so, even with the roster as is, even not adding. But now, instead of buying, the Cubs will be selling… at least all indications tell us that. Again, I’m not convinced that’s the best thing to do, but what do I know. Javy, KB, Rizzo… one of them will be gone? I’m mentally preparing myself. I’d love to unload Happ and Heyward as part of a deal… I also realize how hot a commodity Craig Kimbrel is right now. I guess I can still wear my $10 “Game Over” shirt I bought earlier this year.

It’s not going to be fun. Losing is rough enough as it is, but then to see some pretty direct results of that, in the form of trading away a guy or guys I thought should be in a Cubs uniform their entire career… As Pat says in the 9th inning of every close game, time to buckle up those seat belts Cubs fans… and pray for the best.
