What’s in a number? July 7, or 7/7, makes me think of the number 77. When I think of the number seventy seven I think of…
Karl Mecklenburg. Funny right? Yes, I think of the big Denver Broncos linebacker who played between 1983-1994, made 6 Pro Bowls, and was NFL first team 4 times. Funny enough I don’t remember his nicknames of The Snow Goose and The Albino Rhino. I do remember him causing some havoc on those Broncos teams back in the day; there has to be something else though. There has to be another reason why he jumps into my head. I did collect football cards; I can picture one of his right now. I did play football video games back in the day; I remember playing with him. Weird what sticks in your head, let me tell you. From doing a quick search on him, it looks like there are many folks who believe he belongs in Canton. Good luck to old 77.
Of course another guy that immediately jumps in my head is a lot younger, and currently plays for a Chicago team: Kirby Dach. Yeah, I really like that kid. I didn’t want the Hawks to draft him; I was hot for that local kid… can’t recall his name this minute. I’m glad I was wrong. Kirby looks to be the real deal. Even with his skinny, rookie frame, the kid did some damage; just wait until he bulks up and fills out that long frame. With his puck handling abilities and overall size and skill, we could have a future All-Star on our hands; we may have the guy who can lead the next generation of Blackhawks teams. That’s exciting.

Red Grange ring a bell? Maybe you remember him as “The Galloping Ghost”? His number is actually retired; that explains why there have been no Bears in my lifetime with that number. He is on the NFL 1920s all decade team and one of the 100 greatest Bears of all time. He played at Illinois, tried to start his own football team called the New York Yankees, and also starred in some movies. Sounds like the type of guy that would be huge today. For his play at Illinois, he was voted the number one college football player of all time back in 2008 by ESPN. He was the first football player on a box of Wheaties. The George Clooney movie Leathernecks was loosely based on him. Wowza!
The Cubs have never had a player that wore this number, although Eric Hinske wore it on the bench during the World Series year! The Sox had two: Yolmer Sanchez & Will Ohman. The Bulls have had two: Vladimir Radmanovic & Joffrey Lauvergne. Paul Coffey donned this number, his number, when he played for the Blackhawks back in in 1999; the only other Blackhawk to have it. Ray Bourque & Lyle Alzado are some other famous 77s. Not many though… which is strange…
Because when you look up the number 77 and what it symbolizes it represents luck. “The angel bearing this number is reminding you that you are one of the few people who are lucky in life” Go figure.. the stuff you can find on the internet. I guess that’s why 7-7-7 is lucky in Las Vegas? Who knows, but I do know, if you want to make a name for yourself, as long as you’re not playing for the Chicago Bears, go ahead and choose number 77; it’s pretty wide open.
