July 7, 2019: Junk Man

posted in: Cubs, White Sox | 0

I remember… way back in the day… playing against those junk ball pitchers.  We always did better against the better pitchers.  It was the junk ballers that gave us issues.  Watching the Cubs struggle against Ivan Nova, again, is a perfect example of that.  He is a regular old junk man.  Yet, in his 2 starts vs the Cubs this year he’s dominated.  It’s no surprise to us… he held us in check when he was with Pittsburgh for the most part.  It doesn’t make any sense.  The day before we beat one of the best pitchers in the AL, and Sunday we get shut down by a journeyman.  Frustrating as hell.

If I was one of the other NL Central teams, I’d be looking to acquire Nova.  If you could get 2-3 starts out of him against the Cubs, you’re doing yourself a solid.  Yeah, yeah, the Cubs hit the ball hard the first couple innings, and the RISP plague continued, but still… it had to be with this guy on the mound.  It had to be against the Sox, who are lucky to split the season series with us.  I predicted it all the way though… so guess I shouldn’t be that pissed.

And I’m not… after all, the Cubs, thanks to a Brewers loss, are still in first place.  The way we talk and feel about our Cubbies some days is like they’re in 3rd place in the division… well, actually they’re only 1.5 games from being in 3rd place.  They’re only 4.5 games from being in last place in the division.  So yeah, I guess we are justified.  Because even though we are still in 1st place, it’s a precarious spot.  I can’t help but think we should have a much larger lead at this point in the season.  Yet, knowing how much better the Cubs typically play in the 2nd half of the season, I feel some comfort.

It’s time to recharge the batteries.  The All Star break came at a perfect time.  Actually, it may have been better a couple weeks ago.  Still, we made it through the first half, we’re on top of the division, and now, we can get a reboot and come back stronger; I’m sure we’re not the only team that feels this way.  Although winning 2 of the last 3 games heading into the break put the concern of Maddon getting canned a little bit more on the back burner.  It still could happen… although I really hope not.  Would that be a first?  Firing a manager when their team is in first place?  Lovie did get fired after a 10-6 campaign… Yes, I know it’s not apples to apples, just saying… what have you done for me lately is king, especially when the expectation is championship or bust.  We cannot exit the golden era of Cubs baseball, which still has a lot more years to go by the way, without multiple championships… and I don’t care if that multiple equals two.  We need another World Series title; will Joe be our coach when that happens?

OK, I need to recharge some batteries as well; we all need to once in a while.  Doesn’t mean I won’t still be posting though.  Doesn’t mean I can’t take a look ahead at the 2nd half of the season, and check in on the Bulls in their Summer League action.  I’ve been staying relatively current; definitely want to keep that up.  As for the Cubs, enjoy the rest… unless you’re Baez, Contreras, or Bryant… then kick ass in the All Star game.  See you boys back on the field together with everybody on Friday.  Go Cubs!
