July 7, 2018: The Sports Life

This was a fun Saturday.  It started about 9am as the World Cup matchup between England and Sweden began.

We watched most of it.  At halftime my son had to get his uniform on.  We left with England in control; they held on. Next up our game.

Back to the park for our first late Saturday game.  We were down a couple key players; the other team had a couple decent players too.  They may have one player that would be in the top 5 in the league, at least from the hitting perspective.  It would be our most closely competitive game.

If you don’t remember, we don’t actually keep scores in these games.  So, I keep track of how many outs we get vs how many outs the other team gets.  Every game so far we’ve dominated.  Today was a one out ballgame.  There were a lot of close calls on each side.  We did get a few solid ones thanks to my boy.  Back making those nice plays at first base.  Then he started to come a little too far off the bag, trying to field grounder a hit up the middle.  Had to reel him in a bit.  He even caught one at second base and ran to the bag, instead of trusting our first baseman that inning.   I don’t blame him, but, I try to teach them all the right way.  Told him to throw it next time.

After this game was over, back home, and the second World Cup game was on.  We watched just into extra time before we had to do something not sports related.  Oh yeah, the Cubs were on too…

I listened in the car as the Cubs trailed the Reds, again.  Even though we weren’t in front of the TV, the sports life theme would continue.  As we arrived, the game was heading into the 7th inning.  When I checked my phone, the Cubs were doing it again.  Tie game in the bottom of the 8th; then they took the lead…then they won the game.

After getting home and as my son slept, we watched some more of the Cobra Kai series.  Think I may write a blog about this.  Technically, sports still though.  Once we called it on that, we watched the end of the Russia Croatia game that I had recorded.  I heard they scored twice in extra time before penalty kicks.  It was awesome, especially with the host team playing.  Talk about agony of defeat…

Then we flipped around and landed on the Tour de France; go figure.  It was actually good, or maybe just the part we caught.   There had been an accident, and one of the bikers was bleeding on one half of his face.  He couldn’t stop I guess, so the medic car rode next to him as they tried to attended to him.  He grabbed on to the side of the car as they bandaged him up, all with two motorcycles in front of him with cameramen recording the events.  I thought it was pretty cool.  France in the semifinals of the Cup and the Tour going on; sounds like an exciting time in France.

So there it was.  A day in the sports life that I love.  It doesn’t always break this way, but it did today, and I, not complaining.  Six different sports themed events in one day; thank you can I have another.

The sports life, definitely a similar theme running in our family. So many different sporting events, so little time. From track to wrestling to soccer to football, sports dominate in our lives and even on our TVs. All Chicago teams are obvious, but from there, it is up for grabs. I was glad England won their World Cup match. I did not want France to win theirs…not sure why but just did not want them. Not really into the tour de france, but if you catch it at the right time, who knows. The World Series of Poker has been on recently…love watching that. It is on my bucket list to play in the $10k main event one of these years…how cool would that be to place! Like I said, so many sports, so little time to play them all or even watch them all. Get in where you fit in but always fun when they dominate a day!
