July 7, 2015: Make or Break

posted in: Cubs | 1

So I saw this article saying this Cubs Cardinals series is make or break for the Cubs…  I think that’s a load of crap.

Is the series important? Sure. All division games are, especially against a team that is ahead of you in the standings. But make or break?  It’s like that whole must win game. How can a series in the middle of July be make or break?

Ok, so the cards have owned the Cubs having won 8 of 10 going into the doubleheader Tuesday.  Does that qualify these games as more important?  Maybe, but not critical. Heading into this series at 8 over, and after a doubleheader sweep, 9 over, the Cubs are currently in a wild card spot. Can we catch the Cards for the division?  That’s unimportant at this point.

Making the playoffs should be the new goal for this year. I was going to be happy with 500 or slightly above. Now, after what I’ve seen so far, it’s time to make the playoffs this year. The plan has turned.  We’re seeing the results. It’s time to start making the playoffs year in year out. And it starts now!

Another point the author tried to make was surrounding the trade deadline and really going for it this year. Do you think Theo is going to be swayed one way or another because of one series?  I don’t think the Cubs are going to mortgage away the future at the deadline, but it’s definitely time to be buyers from here on out. Again, starting this year, regardless of the outcome of this series, which the cubs are leading 2-1 by the way.

Why wouldn’t we?  All you need to do is get in, then anything can happen. Can the Cubs beat the Cardinals in a 7 game series?  Maybe not.  Maybe not right now. Does that mean we couldn’t pull off that feat off months from now if put in that spot?  No. Heck no. We COULD beat them or any team if you get hot at the right time. And as Maddon said, and I agree, this team hasn’t even hit its stride yet. It’s coming…

So make or break?  Hardly. Important yes.  Beating the cardinals is always important, yet something that has been difficult this year. It’s all part of the process for this team. Beating the Cards has to happen.  Winning close games, winning big games, is huge. Will the Cubs do it?  I’m not that concerned about that right this second in July. We know when the true test will be?  We know the big games we have to win. The must win games. We’re not there…not yet. About another 80 games will tell the story and if we’re in it when it really matters. Then lets talk make or break. Until then, lets enjoy the doubleheader sweep and try to pound these birds again.  Go Cubs!

Make or break…dont think so. Cubs need to know that they can play with and beat the birds. I think they can and will…soon enough!
