July 6, 2018: Decompressing

posted in: Cubs | 1

I turned my work phone off at 3:31pm.  I can’t promise that I won’t check it, but officially, I’m off for the next 16 days.  I can’t remember the last time I took 2 weeks off.  Maybe since the birth of my son.  I’m really looking forward to decompressing.

Getting out of the matrix is how I refer to it.  Not having to worry about the day to day stuff.  I tried my best to wrap up everything I could, and turn everything else over before I left.  I think we’re good.  Turned on the out of office notifications and hit the door.  Wanted to catch the end of the Cubs game and get ready for our game.

Cubs were losing again, but as I just finished up my last blog, I hoped for the Cubs to do it again and come from behind to win.  I told my buddy to not count his money yet.  He told me the Reds bullpen was good; I was like really?  We’d see.

They started chipping away, as I checked my phone walking from the train.  They were within one run after eight.  I may just make it home for the bottom of the 9th…just in time to see another comeback.  This would be the way to start my vacation.

But it wasn’t meant to be on this day.  The Cubs had a guy on base when I walked in the door.  Heyward was the last chance.  I saw the catch he had made earlier in the game…wow.  He flew out and the Reds beat us, again.  They’ve kicked out butts so far this year.  It would be nice to get them back a bit now; maybe some more comeback wins.  I actually have some money on this series, so yeah, let’s do it.

Then it was time to get ready and head to the park.  It was time for our game.  Surely THIS would be the win I was looking for to start my vacation.  It was.

My son likes to play first base.  He’s good at it.  Being a lefty who will eventually be tall, that’s a great position for him…until he can pitch of course.   I typically start off every game with him at first base, then rotate from there.  Today, another kid ran over there, and was begging to play first base.   I told my son he’ll play first base next inning.  I asked him to help the other kid out, since he was our expert at the position.   He tried, but it didn’t matter, as throw after throw went right past him.  It’s all good.  Then came the 2nd inning.

My son was ready.  He made a couple really nice plays.  He came off the bag two different times to field a pretty decently hit grounder, then rushed to tag the bag.  He looked like a professional out there.  I was proud of course.  He was happy too.  Those couple outs locked up our win.  Our games are always a good way to decompress, vacation or not.

With another game on tap for Saturday, my son asked me if he could play first base in the first inning this time, like he normally does.  I told him ok.  Go Cubs!

Decompressing from work or the normal day to day is very nice and usually much needed…and deserved! Too bad the Cubs couldn’t start the vacay right as the reds continue to have their number recently. The lil Cubs made up for it, though, with a W. Hopefully many more Ws for both teams as the summer continues. Meanwhile, leave that work phone off and enjoy the 16 days! Things are in good hands…hahaha! GO CUBS GO!!!
