July 6, 2017: The One Game Series

posted in: Cubs | 2

It is definitely an oddity, a one game series that is.  Yet that is precisely what the Cubs played Thursday afternoon against the Brewers.  By the way, it wasn’t pretty.

It was a make up game for earlier in the year.  You remember, it was the game the Brewers couldn’t understand was cancelled.  They were “mad”.  The Brewers were on a hot streak and the Cubs were not.  Yet, that is precisely the same set up for the make up game.  The Cubs haven’t had much of a hot streak all year.  Meanwhile, the Brewers shockingly still lead the division and with this win over the Cubs, will lead it at the All Star game.

So the Brewers came into Wrigley hot and mad and kicked our butts; they really showed us who was who in this critical regular season game.  Drive slow homie.

The Cubs played a clunker, while the Brewers played like they have all season.  You could say the whole first half of the season has been a clunker for the Cubs.  If you said that, then you could say both teams played like they have most of the season.  And it was NOT a critical regular season matchup.  Yes, the Cubs are farther out of first place than they have been all year after this loss, but I can hardly define a single pre-all star game critical.  I thought that was funny.

Sure, every game is critical, especially for our 2017 Cubs, who regardless of how they finish the first half up against Pittsburgh, may be the most disappointing team in the majors; maybe the better word is underachieving.  Maybe the better definition is, “they’re just not that good”.  Maybe the best is yet to come…

I just love how people are freaking out over the Cubs.  I understand.  I’ve been there.  I’m NOT there now.  Sure, it’s disappointing.  Sure, I get pissed any time they lose.  Sure, I want to see them win another World Series.  That’s the real key here: “another” World Series.  We just won!!!  Remember?!?!

This season is gravy.  Sure, we’d always love more gravy, but we just gorged ourselves with the main course.  I love how the word pressure is being tossed around.  There will be no pressure that will exceed what they experienced in October and Nobember of last year.  There will be no pressure that great on us either.  Ever.  Again.

It IS a whole different set of issues that the Cubs must contend with after breaking the longest drought in pro sports history.  They have struggled with those, no doubt.  To simplify the on the field issues, it’s starting pitching and not getting the base runners (which we’ve had plenty of) in.  How do you improve timely hitting?  How do you account for the starting pitching falling off a cliff in comparison to the last 2 years?  The answers and timing of those answers will help determine what the second half will hold; I think we’re all ready for the break.

But you won’t find me pulling my hair out over this Cubs team.  First off, I have none, and secondly, we just won the World Series!!!  Do yourself a favor.  When you start feeling that way, remind yourself.  Watch that video.  Look at that picture you have framed in your house and/or office.  Read a book about it.  Drink out of that World Series Champion glass you bought.  Change your Twitter profile picture to something that says 2016 World Series Champions.  It happened.  We finally saw it.  No need to go haywire the year after we finally won it all.  Enjoy it.  Embrace it.  Yes, this Cubs team hasn’t been great thus far, but they did just bring us something we’ve been waiting our whole lives for.  Remember and smile.  Go Cubs!

Enjoy the win brewcrew. Cubs lay an egg in this one game series. Time to worry? Nah. Finish the first half and get ready to make a move in the 2nd half. The defending champs have underachieved without a doubt. What is it going to take to get started? A trade? More lineup shifts? Maybe there are some clubhouse issues and bad chemistry causing some problems? Only they know. The talent is there. Relax and let it play out. Wear that defending champ target proud and get things going. No way will the brewcrew win the nl central right? F that. GO CUBS GO!!!
