The party got started right away on the night of the 3rd. My wife has family in NY; this is where we would be staying. Before that though, we’d travel to 102nd St in Spanish Harlem to visit a building where most of the rest of her family in New York lives. I always enjoy going there; this was no different. Plenty of food, drinks, music, dominoes, and on this night, some fireworks. Honestly, it was pretty tame for the 3rd of July; the night of the 4th would make up for it. Anyways, the gathering that night was a really good time.
The fireworks in the city this year haven’t been too crazy like other years. Last year, man, people were shooting off fireworks a good month before the 4th, and of course, weeks after. This year, at least in Chicago, it wasn’t like that, although there were still people going on the Next Door app complaining about them. “My dogs don’t like them”… “I thought fireworks were illegal”… “Were those gun shots or fireworks?”… People always have something to bitch about. Look, my dog absolutely hates the fireworks too, but… it’s part of life in the big city. Of course, everybody crosses over to Indiana to get “legal” fireworks… same place we go to get most of the guns on the streets too by the way. Yes, there have been times where Chicago has sounded like Beirut at night, but that’s what it is. Don’t get me wrong, if people are popping off shit like at 2am and it’s NOT the 4th, we may have called the cops, but on the 4th or the weekend of… get ready.
This year we wouldn’t be around to find out. Instead, we were looking to see the fireworks go off in the Hudson River in Manhattan; we did see them… sort of. The crowds were large; the police were blocking off streets. We got a glimpse of them, which was still pretty good. The previous 6 hours we were walking the streets in the city; my 9 year old son was a real trooper. As long as we stopped in a store every 15-20 minutes that he liked, we were good. We found some Mexican joint over by NYU/Washington Square; it was really good. Speaking of Washington Square… I guess the cops are just letting people smoke there huh? Anyways, New York was New York… and I loved every minute.

My son got a free lesson, while I ended up $10 poorer… haha. I actually had the first guy, but with that 3 minute clock ticking down, I choked; that’s how they get you. The 2nd guy had a 5 minute clock; it didn’t matter. He destroyed me. Still, it was fun; I really enjoy playing chess… don’t get to play it often enough.
So yeah, a little bit of fireworks in NYC for the 4th this year was fun. We got picked up by my wife’s cousin, thankfully, when our train wouldn’t go all the way to the end of the line due to construction. I believe 138th and 3rd avenue is called the South Bronx… He scooped us and we headed to another party; more fun, more fireworks… Another very late night… did I mention I love New York…
