July 4, 2018: Happy 242nd

Yes, America is 242 years old today.  Still a very young country in the big scheme of things…

We went to see Hamilton earlier this year; it was very good.  Besides being a very entertaining show, it was educational as well.  I don’t remember my US History the way I did when I was in school.  I know 1776, but I thought that’s when George Washington also became president.  But it wasn’t until 13 years later that he officially took the office, and became the 1st president of the US.  He served from 1789-1797; I wonder how he’d do today…

Freshening up on US History would be a very good thing.  It would help give some perspective to all that is going on now in this country.  I remember studying for and taking the US Constitution test.  That is another important component of US History.  To understand our laws would be very valuable.  I wonder how many people actually know this stuff…  I wonder how much our current US president knows about our history…

With all these opinions flying back and forth, with everybody thinking they’re right, I wonder how many of us actually took the time to do a little research about the topics we’re claiming to have a correct opinion on.  I’m guilty too.  There are so many things thrown around…  the right vs the left… when did that become such a big deal?  All the talk about gun control and the 2nd amendment.  The controversy around immigration in a country that is made up of immigrants.  Sometimes all this crap makes me sick.  Sometimes I feel like I should educate myself on all these topics so that I can have an educated opinion and try to do something about it all.  It feels like it would be hard to make a difference…

People read one line of information.  People see one minute of a video.  Now everybody has a correct opinion based on that snapshot.  I’m guilty of it too.  Making snap judgments based on a small sample size of information.  That seems all too common today; social media makes it even easier… sending out extreme opinions while sitting behind your computer/phone in private… nice.

How do we re-educate folks?  How do we stop people (and ourselves) from getting stupid?  Read a book for starters.  Take a history class.  You know it’s not only folks coming to this country that should learn about our history, it’s folks that were born and raised here.  What about leaning on certified experts on certain topics instead of following a popular opinion like a herd of sheep without any original thought of our own?  How can we weed out the “fake news” that is out there?  Getting to the truth about certain topics, the real truth, is very important.  What is the truth?

OK, enough of my ranting, and yes, we will return back to sports, but not before wishing Happy Birthday to our country.  A country that has been great (far from perfect) long before somebody wanted to make it a campaign slogan.  We just need to wake up and realize it.  HBD USA.

Happy Birthday America! Home of the free, land of the brave! America is the best country but by no means is it perfect. There are corrupt politicians and leaders. There are criminals and illegals. At the end of the day, our education on America’s history probably needs a refreshening, just as it does with current issues and people throughout the nation. So much fake news. So many opinions. It is fine to have an opinion, even if it is a dumb one or not right. That is part of what makes America so great…you can speak your mind, but that does not mean it is truth or right or should happen or anything like that. A lot of history and great people have helped make the USA what it is and that continues…we should not forget that. The good overwhelms the bad 99% of the time. Enjoy this country! Happy 4th of July America!!!
