July 4, 2015: Looking Back

posted in: Cubs | 0

Happy 4th!  Lots of good memories on the 4th of July.  For me growing up having neighborly fireworks competitions was awesome.  My dad would have his arsenal, while the neighbor on each side would bring theirs. We would rotate popping off fireworks.  Those were some long, fun nights.

Meeting my wife to be, we spent the 4th in many different locations. From LA to Miami, from Vegas to NYC, more good times were added to the 4th memory bank.  But this is about sports… Chicago sports.

The only sport we can really associate with the 4th is baseball. At first thought, there are not that many memories that pop to mind on this day. Yet, looking back only to last year, finds a memorable one.

Driving back from another 4th party, the news broke of a Cubs trade.  There was a good article on espn written about this today. I remember my feelings from that night… I captured them right here back on July 5,2014.

It had been another rough start for the cubs…the 3rd year in a row they flirted with the basement. Yet, they seemed to be coming together. In my positive, dreamer’s mind, they were turning the corner.  Reality of a happy ending to that season hit when the trade news broke; the Cubs were dumping again.

I felt mixed emotions on that night. Coming to grips with another losing season, I wondered how soon this cubs team would turn the corner. Looking back one year later, the Cubs have finally arrived. That night last year would be the last time for a while the Cubs would be sellers at the break.

That move added an important piece to the future: Addison Russell. And with Shark struggling still in the AL, and Hammel back in the Cubs rotation, it definitely looks like the Cubs did the right thing. Only time will tell how good Addison gets.

It was time to trust in Theo again. It’s so hard to trust the Cubs. Yet, our trust in Theo looks like it is coming to fruition. The Cubs are going to be battling for a playoff spot THIS year, not next year.

With the first fireworks show in Wrigley history scheduled for tonight, I still wait. I still wait for the ultimate celebration to take place on Addison and all throughout the city, and world. That’s the memory I still want to add. It’s great that we can finally picture it happening, and not be dreaming.  Is 2015 the Cubs year?  Talk to you in a few months.
