July 4, 2014: Freedom

In the week of the one-word titles, we go back to William Wallace in Braveheart.  FREEEEEEDOM!  Although this isn’t an American movie, it is about freedom; that same freedom we celebrate today on July 4th.  It’s nice to be free.  It’s something we probably take for granted, something that we just assume is normal.  Well, it wasn’t something we had more than 238 years ago.  It was something that had to be fought for.  How do you like your freedom?

I’m exercising my right as I write about Chicago sports every day.  It’s nice to be able to do what you want to do.  Some people take it a little too far in today’s world of social media, on facebook, twitter, and online chats… some people should have these freedoms taken away for being idiots.  People should really think before they write.  I try to think before I write.  Sharing my opinions via writing this blog is something I enjoy.  I appreciate this small freedom.  How do we give back?

Well, let’s start by supporting our country.  I’m not going to get too deep here, but a quick thank you to the individuals who won our freedom, and those who fight to keep our freedom is never out of place.  How about supporting the good old US of A through our sports teams?  We had a good recent example of that in the World Cup.  Unfortunately, they got eliminated on Tuesday, but it was nice to see how a lot of us got behind them, and supported them in their quest to do what’s never been done before by a US team:  win a World Cup.  I know that was pretty big to some people; big enough for ESPN to ask the poll question:  What would you rather see?  The US win a World Cup, or your favorite professional/college team win a championship.  I’m sorry, but although I was supporting our team in the World Cup, there is no way I’d rather see that over a Cubs World Series championship.  For that matter, I’d rather see the Bulls, Blackhawks, and Bears win a title then the US win the World Cup.  That’s not very patriotic of me… although I was feeling pretty patriotic last night.

What’s your favorite patriotic movie?  The Patriot?  It has the right name.  Born on the 4th of July?  What can be more patriotic than being born on independence day?  How about Independence Day?  I like Forrest Gump, that is a good ole American flick.  What about movies about some of our presidents, like W, JFK, or Lincoln?  Or how about Captain America!  Speaking about USA sports, what about Miracle?  Although I haven’t seen all of the above mentioned movies, I’m sure they make us all feel a little patriotic.  Well,  I got to see the last hour of one of my favorite patriotic movies last night:  Rocky IV.
In the United States, nearly 30 million men are expected to suffer from some degree of ED, generic no prescription viagra while the most concerning factor is most of them do not seek medical advice for their condition. Kamagra, which has proved as the most effective and safest medicines for impotence is free sildenafil samples . Perhaps, you would have heard a man complaining about loss or lack of erection during the bulk generic viagra http://appalachianmagazine.com/m0003208-coalville-swimming-bath-locker-room/ sexual activity.Till today, maximum numbers of the buy medicine online patients noted are the old men. What you need is cialis free sample not what you have.
Rocky IV?  Yeah, Rocky IV.  I thought it was pretty patriotic.  Rocky goes to Russia to fight the invincible Ivan Drago in a classic underdog flick… a classic USA vs Russia clash.  When Rocky knocked him out, and the whole Russian crowd cheered for him, it seemed a little far fetched.  Then Rocky, draped in an American flag after just beating Drago, gave a quick speech ending to the Russian crowd: “if I can change, you can change, everybody can change”.  Yeah USA!

The best USA team of all time?  The 1980 Olympic hockey team has to be up there, but I really don’t remember that since I was only 3 years old.  For me, it’s the Dream Team.  That may be the best team ever assembled in any sport in any country.  The Dream Team was the best USA team of all time.  With MJ, Magic, Bird, Barkley, Ewing, Malone, & Stockton for starters, they dominated the competition.  They may have been a big reason why basketball has become so global since then… still behind soccer, but definitely #2.  There is no other team that compares to them.

So a little bit of everything USA today.  How about being born on the year the country celebrated its 200th birthday?  That’s a pretty cool and patriotic thing that I can lay claim to.  At least, it makes remembering how old our country is very easy.  So, Happy 238 America, and thank you for allowing us the freedom to enjoy it all.
