It’s one of the reasons I like Las Vegas so much; the people watching is great. The people are from everywhere, not only throughout this country, but from countries all over the world. Not only do I like seeing everyone, I like sitting down next to them, at the poker table or any other table, and hanging out; it’s part of what makes Vegas great. To a lesser degree, another great place to watch people is at the airport. It’s in this place where many paths cross, coming and going, from places all around and outside the country. Sitting back, waiting at my gate, or walking around the terminal, I enjoy it… as long as I’m not rushing to try to get to my flight. LA is another great place to people watch, and one of the best places to do this in LA… is Venice Beach.
Wednesday late afternoon was spent in Venice; it was kind of like walking around in downtown Vegas. It’s fun seeing my son looking around at all the stuff going on. You had the street performers; people gather around to listen to them and watch the show. Personally, not too interested in that part of Venice. There was the sign made by an artist that we took pictures by; that was cool. Of course, all the artists and vendors lining the beach that add character; how about all the homeless, or people that look homeless? The surfers, the beach bums, the people from all over the world that are walking up and down the beach all add to it. Then of course the “sports section”… You have muscle beach, the basketball courts, the handball courts, and the skate park; my favorite of all was the skate park.
After watching skateboarding in the Olympics, I was kind of in the mood. Although I never could get down skateboarding, I enjoy watching the skaters fly around the skate park in Venice; they were putting on their own show… maybe a future Olympian was part of it? There were people from all shapes and sizes, all races and ages, men and women, all getting their skate on. As we stood near the railing, one of the guys whizzed by, startling my son; yes, they were going fast, and you know what? They all fell; we even saw a collision. Watching them try to fly over the garbage can that was positioned on the course was fun. Man, I wish I could skateboard…
We ended up having a drink and a little grub at the cafe, grabbing a table right on the railing, so we could continue to watch people walk by, and listen to the guy playing the piano right next to us; he sounded great. In and out of the shops we continued as we headed out, picking up a few souvenirs. Venice Beach is one of our favorite parts of LA; I think my son may be in agreement now too. The LA tour continues…
