July 30, 2019: Losing First Place

It sucks… losing first place… to the Cardinals above all teams.  It sucks… only being able to score 1 run… in an important division game with your rival who you were tied for first place with.  But the games will go on…

I hate to beat a dead horse, but this is frustrating.  The Cardinals suck… sorry, they do.  The Brewers aren’t that great either.  The Cubs should have a comfortable lead in this division.  I firmly believe that.  Unfortunately, belief doesn’t equal reality, and at the end of the day, it’s the wins and losses in the standings that determine who goes on to the postseason.  I don’t want to hear excuses OK?  We’ve heard a lot of them… played so many games in so many days… balls are flying out of the ballpark… umpires squeezing us… running up against hot teams…  At the end of the day, the Cubs need to play through all of it.  They need to be above it all, and get Ws any and every way possible.

We’re so damn spoiled right now, aren’t we?  I mean, this stretch of Cubs baseball is better than any in our lifetimes.  4 straight playoff appearances & the holy grail once.  What more can we ask for?  Well, another World Series of course.  Yet, knowing what we’ve accomplished in the past number of years somehow lessens the blow sometimes for me, when I’m pissed at the Cubs.  I fall back on that…  I feel good about it…  I think of the days the Cubs really sucked… I think of how lucky we are to have this team.  Still, I don’t want to rationalize my way to accepting the Cubs losing; I don’t want to settle for performance that is not up to par.  There is the source of it all… the feeling that the Cubs are better than their record indicates.  The Cubs are underachieving… that hurts to say.  Who has the answer to this riddle as to why the Cubs are struggling?

Maddon seems to have no idea at this point, but come on… you have reporters asking you questions after every loss in a season, and what the heck are you going to say?  You just can’t win them all… somebody smart said that.  Losing a road game to the team we’re tied with in first place isn’t horrible.  We played a tight low scoring one run affair, and came out on the wrong side; it happens.  Thing is, it’s been happening way too much on the road; another tough one to figure out.  Yet, we still have time to figure it out… but we don’t have forever.  And with this “every game counts” motto, we need to start acting like it.  Seize the moment boys… because unfortunately, these days won’t be here forever either.  We need to strike while it’s hot; we need to take advantage of all this talent on the field and win, win, win!!!  Let’s start Wednesday night in St. Louis… but first… the trade deadline.  Go Cubs!
