I remember when the Bears made their selection:  Roquan Smith was a great pick in my opinion.  I was hot for that lineman, but when he was off the board, best available became Roquan.

I called it.  I told my son as the Bears were on the clock; I’d be ok with him.  He knows the name too.  We all do.  The minute the Bears took a LB high in the draft, the LB comparisons began.  Butkus, Singletary, and Urlacher are the names most of us know.  To join that company, you better be pretty special.  I was ready to find out.

I’m still ready to find out.  Nothing will be proven in training camp.  We won’t know much through the preseason games.  But at some point, you have to get on the field.  Roquan Smith remains the only one left from the first round draft picks to be unsigned.

The stories have been coming out.  The issue supposedly lies with the new tacking rule that the NFL put in place.  The potential for fines and suspensions if using your helmet… for tacking improperly.  That’s a joke.

I understand what the NFL is trying to do.  They’re doing what they have to do.  They’re trying to make the game safer.  I just don’t know how you make a game safe when you have 250lb beasts running into each other full speed.  It’s almost impossible.  When you sign up to play football, you know the risks.  That’s why my wife has already ruled out football for my son; there are plenty of other sports she says…

So you’re going to punish these types of players?  The NFL is, with penalties, fines, and suspensions.  There are some clear cut cases.  There are some repeat offenders that will need to be wrangled in.  But most of this stuff is going to be a bang bang subjective type play that only when you look at the replay can you make that judgment.  I know it’s supposed to make the game safer, but if you ask me, it’s only giving the refs a chance to make a game changing call to help Papa Vegas.  But that’s the NFL.

But now your team wants to punish you for this subjectivity via dollars in your contract?   If that’s what it’s about, and I don’t know for sure…not sure anybody writing those stories does, I’m with Roquan.  I’m going to play my ass off full speed with aggressiveness and power and you want to punish me through my contract language?   What kind of precedent are we setting?   What kind of team do we want to field?

I’m excited about this season.  I think the Bears are going to be good.  I want them to be better than good.  I want Roquan to be on the field with us.  Figure this out, and get it done.  Bear Down!
