July 3, 2016: Holiday Gift

posted in: Cubs | 2

I hate to say I called it, but after watching the Cubs lose that tough game on Thursday night to the Mets, I wondered about a sweep…  The Mets completed the 4 game sweep of the Cubs in convincing fashion with a blowout win on Sunday.

Losing sucks.  One game is manageable.  A 1-6 week, like 2 weeks ago, is brutal.  A 4 game sweep at the hands of a team that swept you last postseason… a team that we could potentially meet in this postseason… after a 1-6 week…  stay away from the windows.  I’m actually glad I didn’t get to watch most of the series.  I did watch some here and there.

I watched a bit of Friday’s rain delayed game.  I was at work late, but still managed to get home by the start.  Then it was delayed again, as we took a quick ride on Friday night.  Saw it was 4-0, then 4-1… then over.  Saturday night I didn’t see one pitch.  Hoping Jake would be that stopper he has been, I thought that was our best chance for a win.  Another tough one run loss is what ensued, as Jake dropped to 12-3.  On to Sunday… I thought I’d watch this whole game.  I turned it on in the first inning.  I missed the Cubs first run, but saw Curtis go deep on Lester.  I then fell asleep…  When I woke up, it was like 8-1 and Lester was out of the ball game.  This year, I feel almost as good with Lester on the mound as I do with Arrieta, but he had a bad, bad game… the worst of his career I believe.  Hammel turned in that same performance a couple nights earlier.  It all adds up to a 4 game bomb… and the frustration sets in.

Then I take a breath…  I try to tell myself it’s a long season, and this stuff happens; it does.  I try to tell myself that we swept the Mets in the regular season last year, and look what happened; I most certainly would take the opposite this year.  OK, feeling a little better.  Let me check the standings.

The Cubs are still in first place… by 8 games.  Good.  The Cubs are STILL the best team in baseball…by percentage points…even after losing 10 of 14 games.  OK, feeling better.  I try to look for the silver lining in any situation, and there is plenty of it here.

Actually, maybe I’m trying to stretch it, but could this have been good for the Cubs?  Just like that 1-6 week, this 4 game sweep is helping bring the Cubs back down to earth…. crashing a bit, but maybe we needed this.  Like I said,  maybe I’m stretching it.  But, I’d much rather go through rough stretches now.  I’d much rather have gut wrenching defeats at this point of the season… at any point in the regular season compared to the postseason.  You can’t afford to have rough stretches in the postseason… a game, yes, but not too much more.  The goal here is still to get to the postseason.  OK, I know it’s much more than that, but like the old saying goes, you have to get in to win.  The Cubs are still tracking.

Screw it, I’ll go with that theory too.  I’d like to thank the Mets for bringing us back down to earth.  Thank you for this holiday gift.  You showed us that no matter how good we are, we still have a lot of work to do.  You showed us that no more what the record, a team can get hot, and kick your ass.  You showed us, that we better stay focused… and healthy… and keep our winning ways as consistent as we can over 162; although still looking good, postseason is no guarantee.  We need to bring our A game each and every night.  We need to realize sometimes this won’t be enough…  Maybe the Cubs didn’t need those reminders, but maybe we did.  I’m feeling better, how about you?  OK, how does 7 games against the Reds and Pirates this week make you feel?  Let’s get back to raising the W.  Go Cubs!

Cubs are scuffling, no doubt about it. Getting swept by the mets did not feel good and neither does struggling, but that is the reality of a long 162 game season. 120 wins was not a goal. Winning the division and making the playoffs is. What happens from there is anybody’s guess. Stay away from the ledges Cubs fans. The Cubs will be just fine, and so will we. Losing happens. A few here, some more there, sometimes some bad streaks, but at the end of the day, the Cubs are a good team that will accomplish their goals this year. GO CUBS GO!!!
