July 3, 2015: Pitching Power

posted in: Cubs, White Sox | 1

There has been some good pitching going on around town.

Nothing beats being on the mound. Having the ball in your hand for every single play. Having more control over the outcome of a game than anyone. I guess that’s why when betting baseball, the starters for the game are always listed. If your pitching is better than their pitching, you got a pretty good chance. It doesn’t always work out that way…

There are always some tough luck pitchers. Guys who throw great, but don’t see the results. Those guys who don’t get any run support; the ones that feel they must throw a shutout to win. Well, that’s what the Cubs pretty much did this past series in New York.

28 innings, 1 run given up; not too shabby. Funny thing, if it broke just right, they could have still lost a game in that series.  They swept the Mets, winning the season series 7-0. It’s supposed to be about this great Cubs lineup. We’re supposed to really need some more starting pitching. It hasn’t exactly worked out that way lately. The offense has sputtered. The pitching has shined. Only giving up 2 runs today, should have meant a win, but it didn’t. You have to score some runs.

A guy on the other side of town knows about not getting that run support. The guy that has good stuff almost every single time out. Yeah, he had a couple rough outings earlier this year, but lately, he’s been his good old self: lights out. I think it was 75 Ks in 61 innings and a 1.83 ERA for the month of June. Something like that. It was good enough to get Chris Sale pitcher of the month. Unfortunately, it hasn’t been good enough to get the Sox out of the basement. Can he pitch every 3 days?

It has been the bats on both sides of town that have been underperforming. Cubs rank 12 out of 15 in the NL. Sox?  Dead last. The weather is getting nicer now, which usually leads to some hotter bats. We’re waiting…

Until then, both teams look towards their pitching power. How long will the pitching carry the Cubs?  Who else is going to step up with Chris Sale for the Sox?  It’s almost all star break. It’s time for the whole team effort to take effect. Lets give some support to those guys on the mound.  Batter up!
