July 28, 2018: Double Dose of Dust

posted in: Cubs | 0

It’s been a rough baseball season.  The rainouts have caused the most havoc.  I think there are 4-5 makeup games on the schedule.  It pretty much eliminates any practice days.  I think it also gets certain parents in the groove of not having a game on the weekend.  That’s not the case with most of my parents.

We always have a good number of kids.  I thanked the parents there this past Friday.  As the other team had a grand total of 3 kids show up, we were 9 deep.  In order to get the game in, it made sense to give the other team some help.  This wasn’t the first time we had to do this.

The first time we loaned a couple kids to the White Sox; when we asked for volunteers, we got them pretty easily.  Maybe it was because it was the White Sox.  When we asked for volunteers to go help the Nationals, nobody wanted to do it.  I asked my coaches, what now?  Pick a number time.  3 kids picked five; those 3 kids were going to the Nationals.

One of the kids had a complete meltdown.  He was crying by his parents.  When he came back on the field, I thanked him for helping the other team out.  He went back to his parents.  They ended up asking me if it was ok for him to not go; I said ok, after all, the Nationals did have another kid show.

If it doesn’t rain, these fields are a sandbox.  The kids love it.  If they’re not kicking up dust on the field, they’re sliding into home plate.  I had one kid trying to bury second base; that was a new one.  Thankfully it wasn’t too windy; that’s the worst combo.  The uniforms were plenty dirty after this double dose of dust this weekend.

My son and I have a routine.  We wear different shoes to and from the game, and change into our game shoes for the game.  After Friday’s game, we took off our shoes and poured out the dirt.  There was a ton of dirt.  After Saturday’s game, not so much.  The only reason why is because my son got soaked in the park sprinkler after the game.  Now those dirty socks and shoes were mud caked.  Fun for laundry time no doubt; thanks Mom.

We won both games; the second one barely.  We didn’t play our best this weekend.  A couple kids did blast a few.  When my son came up to bat, I asked if he had been paying attention.  I said the other two big boppers hit it really good; what are you going to do?   He hit it ok; he did better Saturday.

This one kid almost got hit in the face before the game Saturday; whew, that was close.   Yep, we avoided injuries again this weekend, which is always positive.

Another double header next week and the following, final week.  Hoping to finish strong.  Go Cubs!

Hated rainouts when I was playing baseball…never wanted to miss a game. I also hated the dust bowls that the fields would turn into when it didn’t rain, especially once I started wearing contacts. Man, it really sucked getting something in my eye back then…still does to this day. It sucks when kids don’t show up to games consistently. Glad to hear your team is pretty good about it. Hopefully no more rainouts, just Ws to finish the year! GO CUBS GO!!!
