July 27, 2017: South Side Beatdown

posted in: Cubs, White Sox | 1

I’ve seen a few in my day.  Sometimes it was a fair fight; sometimes it wasn’t.  The one I witnessed at Comiskey Park III was not a fair fight.

The two franchises are in much different places.  The Cubs are defending champs, and are still among the best in the majors.  The Sox are in full rebuild mode, and it’s a couple years away…at least.  It’s no secret.

Yet, we throw the records out for this series.  We know it’s going to be a dogfight.  The fans will talk smack.  And yes, the Sox can still win on Thursday night to even the annual series 2-2.  But it’s men among boys out there, and as the Sox continue to get younger and work towards fielding a competitive major league team, just remember the Cubs are just getting started too; they’re not going anywhere.

As I’ve said, we are living in the golden era of Cubs baseball.  Two playoff appearances in a row.  A World Series victory.  Positioned to make the playoffs from here on out. As Cubs fans, we’ve never been here, so forgive me if I don’t know how to act.

I try not to be cocky.  I’m just very thankful that I got to see it.  But it’s the Crosstown Series for God’s sake.  If I can’t talk a little smack now, when then?

It’s time to remind Sox fans what happened in November.  It’s time to show off our trophy, the one the Sox haven’t seen in 12 years.  It’s time to remind them that their stadium is half empty most of the time, while ours is full.  It’s time to remind them not to rush the field to beat up umpires.  It’s time to remind them that they are the baseball stepchildren in this city more than ever.  It’s all about the Cubs; remember the parade?

I don’t care if the numbers were a bit inflated; there was still multiple millions of people there.  And while I know the Sox fans would surely show up in the thousands, it’s obvious who is the more relevant team in town.  It’s always been this way.  The sports talk shows, sports radio, the national scene…Chicago is home of the Cubs…and some other team.

Yes, and I know that’s why there are Sox fans that absolutely hate the Cubs for this very reason.  It’s a complex type of thing.  Never wanting to set foot in Wrigley Field.  Strongly rooting against the Cubs for 162 games plus every year.  Wanting the Cubs to lose more than wanting the Sox to win.  Yeah, I know some.  I also know others that aren’t that way; sorry for the rant.

I wonder what t-shirts will be outside of their stadium.  No more 108 year drought, billy goat, or Bartman shirts.  No more shirts flaunting their one World Series title, because we have one now too.  There will always be crap to talk, but we have the ultimate trump card now.  The Cubs have won the World Series.  We are defending champions.  It’s a game changer.  Things will never be the same.

And things will always be the same.  Cubs vs Sox will always bring out the best and worst of us.  If only we can see this on the biggest stage.  I’d love to see the Cubs perform this type of beatdown in October and November.  But, I’ll settle for a weeknight in July.  8-3 was the final.  It wasn’t even that close.  Go Cubs!

Comiskey Park III=CP3…hahaha. Anything but Guaranteed Rate, please. Well, in addition to getting treated on the ball field, at least the sox were also treated to their 3rd sellout of the year. Must be nice to play before a full house, even if at least half of the fans are rooting for the Cubs. By the time the 7th and 8th inning rolled around, CP3 was back to normal…half empty, 90% Cubs fans. Way to stay and support the young guys sox fans! Maybe you missed moncada’s first career dinger…a nice shot to center. Oh well, should be a 4th sellout tonight and 2 in a row. Keep that streak going sox fans! The Cubs extended their Winning streak to 2 vs the sox and look to win the season series tonight with Lester on the mound. Jake did his job and so did the bats. Rizzo with the big 3 run double to clear the bases in the 5th. Enjoy the season finale tonight and the rebuild the rest of the year. Let those young guys play and see what the future looks like. As for the Cubs, welcome back to the top of the NL central…no looking back now. Finish this triple A club off and head to Wrigley north to show the brewcrew how far in the rearview mirror they can go!
    GO CUBS GO!!!
