July 26, 2015: Basement Sweeping

posted in: Cubs, White Sox | 0

It’s usually not fun. I remember growing up our basement would get flooded after an extremely heavy rainfall. After sucking the water up and dumping the buckets out, it was time to sweep. With the heavy rains this summer, I’m sure there was a lot of that going on. There was some of that going on this weekend.

Let’s start with a sweep of the good variety.  The AL central cellar dwellers are no longer. The Sox put a hurting on the Indians this weekend.  A clean four game sweep is what happened.  Some outstanding pitching is what lead the way.  Now the Indians take their place in the basement as the Sox make their way up the standings. Will it continue?  The Royals sure aren’t slowing up. With the addition of Johhny Cueto, they may not be caught. But that’s not the only road into the postseason. Maybe that’s a little premature, but a 4 game sweep has to feel good. It didn’t feel so good in Wrigley this weekend.

The Cubs were swept by the worst team in baseball.  Yeah, the no hitter was kind of cool, but the rest of the games were disgusting. A blown save on Friday. A blowout on Sunday. A weekend wasted. No longer in that wild card position, the Cubs are at a crossroads. It’s either downhill from here or a battle back uphill. Which way is this story headed?

I talked about passing ships the other day, and it’s the same, except both ships have turned around. It’s easy to overreact in a 162 game season, with all the ups and downs. This week is the trade deadline. Next week is August. Things are getting serious here.  Other teams are stepping up or stepping out. Where do we stand?

We had two varieties of basement sweeping happen with our baseball teams this weekend.  I’m ready to be on the other side of that event. Rockies coming into town so it’s possible. White sox heading to Boston, it could happen again. This week is a biggie, with the trade deadline looming. Let the sweeping and trading begin.
