Hey, hey, whadd’ya say, the Cubs are gonna win today. Yeah, the Cubs are back… again, sweeping the Phillies in Philadelphia to start the 2nd half of the baseball season. Does anyone really think this is meaningful?
Any W is meaningful first and foremost. Sweeping a major league team, a good team, on the road, is nothing to sneeze at. Very happy and surprised that the Cubs pulled off this feat, but don’t get it twisted. It doesn’t change anything about the direction of this team. The Cubs are still at the bottom of the NL Central standings; they’re still at the bottom of the MLB in general. We’d need a lot more sweeps to really make a dent in that position. The Cubs are still going to move their best player in the upcoming days. Hey, I don’t want it to happen; I don’t want to believe it, but yeah… still scarred from last year’s events (in case you didn’t know from my couple dozen blogs bitching about it), it’s just going to be an add on to that frustration, pain, anger. Contreras went deep this weekend; I really love Willson. If you don’t think every team needs a guy like Willson, besides the fact that he is an All Star catcher. The dude is all heart and passion. He gives a shit, which is why die hard fans like myself love him. You want to feel that the players care as much about the result of each of these 162 games as you do. I really believe Willson is one of those guys; he wears it on his sleeve too. He’s not perfect, but who is? The dude is an all star at a very difficult position, but I guess 30 years old is too old? Too old to be apart of any type of rebuild that the Cubs are/aren’t selling us. It’s frustrating to hear Ross’ comments about it too; he seems resigned to this result as well, completely selling the company line on more bullshit. What happened to you Rossy?
So yeah, here I am, to rain on the Cubs sweep parade; go figure. Mr. Positive, savoring each and every W in a long season… I should be overjoyed right about now. Yeah, yeah… it’s fun to win; it’s always great to Fly That W… but it’s just a 2nd half tease. It’s just one of those “ups” in a season of ups and downs. Not quite like waiting for the next shoe to drop, but just understanding how a long season works; understanding how a long season works for a team that is not very good. There will be more downs than ups, that’s for sure; this latest “up” doesn’t change that. In fact, it only frustrates me more. To think if the Cubs just spent some of that money they’re keeping under the mattress, this Cubs team could actually be in the middle of things in this shitty ass division. To think, that the Cubs aren’t done with this complete, absolute, F-ing destruction of a very competitive team; things will get worse before they get better type stuff. Yeah, this is seeping into my joyous vibes from the sweep; you understand right?
