We’re familiar with the up and down roller coaster that a 162 game season brings, and yet still, we overreact. When our team is rolling, it’s World Series time. When our team is slumping, who we trading at the trade deadline? With a 60 game season, this will all be magnified. It won’t be as bad as football, where in a 16 game season, the importance of every game is tremendous. However, it will be almost 3 times more important this season. With this comes a very thin margin for error. I have some examples from the Cubs first loss of the season on Saturday.
Let’s start with the rundown. Those type of mistakes simply cannot happen. We allowed the Brewers an extra out; they scored a run. Sure, that run wasn’t the difference, but giving away free outs that eventually turn into runs will just about sink you every single time. What about walking an inferior hitter with 2 outs before their big bopper comes up? Yeah, who was it… Eric Sogard? 2 outs, nobody on base, and you walk him on 4 pitches? That’s just flat out unacceptable, even more unacceptable considering the guy who stepped up to the plate after him. Sure, we had held Yelich down thus far in the series, but opening up that door, giving him that bonus opportunity to do damage, and BAM… 2 run homer.
In a shortened season, guess what else is magnified? The pitching of the bullpen will be closely monitored. In their first chance on Saturday, I would give them an F. Sure, Yu didn’t have the best game, but we were still in it, until the bullpen came in. Sure, one bad outing will not cause panic, but… it does cause a little unrest. And then there’s the next time they come into the game… Oh man. What about a hitting slump? Sure, you have a bad series or two in a regular season, fine. Yet, you struggle in a couple series this year, and you just flushed down 10% of the season. Kris Bryant started off the campaign 0-9. Again, 1, 2 bad games OK, but… another, and another? Yeah, it gets worse really quick.

Normally I get pissed about every loss; this year? Well, considering each loss is about 3 times as worse… yeah. I can’t get that bad that quickly. One loss? OK, shrug it off; it’s going to happen. But 2, 3 in a row? You just lost 5% of your games. Imagine going on a losing streak? Losing 3 of 4 series… something like that. God forbid getting swept, going on a 10 game losing streak. Yes, this year will be different.
Of course there is the flip side to all of this. Go on a winning streak, a hitting streak, a few scoreless outings in a row, capitalizing on mistakes from the other team… beautiful. I look to see who’s on the mound in Sunday’s series finale, and I see Tyler Chatwood; I got to tell you, he does not give me the warm and fuzzies… he does not bring back good memories. He was better out of the bullpen last year… Time to get back on that winning side, and quick. Let’s get this first series win; I’d hate to drop below 500 already. Get ready for the 2020 pressure cooker. Go Cubs!
