It has to be it. Kris Bryant just hasn’t looked like himself. He already missed time for his shoulder, now some more? Going into the season, there were one of two guys that we couldn’t afford to get hit with the injury bug; Rizzo was one of them. The other half looks to have been bitten.
Shoulder surgery? Missing the rest of the season? You see all kinds of theories out on that World Wide Web. I’d like to think another short DL stint will do the trick, but I’m afraid he will not be 100% this year. That’s scary. But Kris Bryant at 75% is still better than most right? How can we go deep into the postseason without KB at 100?
One of the strengths of this Cubs team is its depth; it will be tested. Anybody heard of David Bote before this year? Now I don’t follow the minor leaguers like I used to about 4 years ago, but I was not aware of this kid. He’s looked solid; a surprise hero? Oh yeah, Happ can play infield too; I guess it’s good we didn’t package him up. Zobrist, LaStella, and of course Javy, can all fill in. Am I missing somebody? Maybe another minor leaguer, or a deadline veteran acquisition? Do we need more?
Ideally we get KB back; still not convinced we can win it all otherwise. It’s probably a bit too early to be overreacting like this anyways. But as evidenced by our two position player all stars this year, the Cubs are full of star power; this star power that has postseason experience as well. That’s the great thing, well, another great thing; all these guys are young, and they already have that big stage experience.
The all stars Javy and Willson. Javy already won NLCS MVP; you know he’s ready to go. Although Tuesday night, he hurt his knee too. That looks to be minor, but just another reminder how fragile this all is. Maybe it’s Willson’s turn on the big stage. Oh yeah, and then there’s the Schwarbino. He’s had a knack for October…and November.

The point is that we have plenty of guys that can step up. Multiple guys can shine and carry us for periods. But, one of those guys is down. It minimizes the room for error; we’re one huge part down.
I’m not even talking about the pitching. Remember Yu Darvish? The latest is that he may be back at the end of August?!? I’ve said it here before, we will need him too when it comes down to it. But can we really count on him at this point?
Two players, one of our best hitters, and a guy that was supposed to be near the top of our rotation, not currently contributing. We’ve made it this far, but the postseason is a completely different animal. I sure would like to have all our weapons when October heats up.
That’s a full two months away, and there is still business to attend to. Maybe the question should be will we be able to overcome these injuries and make the postseason, and not worry about when we get there? Don’t panic yet. Go Cubs!

Missing KB hurts. Not as much right now with the Cubs in 1st place, but it will hurt even more if it is season ending. I do not believe it will be. Give him his time. Let the shoulder heal and get right. Come back in September to play some games and get ready for the playoffs. Same deal for Yu. I still believe he can pay dividends this year. The Cubs do not have anything clinched yet…far from it. It seems like it will be a dog fight all summer long with the brewcrew. But, I am confident that the Cubs can take time to get guys healthy and rely on their depth to still get the job done. GO CUBS GO!!!
