Friday night, July 24: who would have ever thought in a million years that THIS would be the first game the Cubs play in the 2020 season. Getting through this pandemic has not been easy; getting through this pandemic without Cubs baseball, during those months of the year when we enjoy the return of the Cubs, when we enjoy seeing the boys play in Wrigley, when we enjoy seeing Cubs Nation travel and represent to all those road games, was even more tough. Well, they’re back; a step towards normal in this household.
Waking up in the morning, I was thinking about it. Checking Twitter after walking the dog to see that Comcast and Marquee had come to an agreement, started the day off on the right foot. I just knew they had to get this done; there was no way all those people would not be able to watch the Cubs. That would be suicide for Marquee and the Cubs. I finally had Marquee, and although I missed watching all that Cubs content during the pandemic, I’d have the games for when they actually count in 2020. Picked out a Cubs shirt to wear, put up the Cubs flag… the countdown was on for the first game of the season.
On the mound would be Kyle Hendricks; great choice in my opinion to be the Opening Day starter. He did not disappoint. He was absolutely dealing. Seeing him make Yelich look helpless was probably my favorite part. Got nobody relaying what pitch is coming next huh Christian? Yelich wasn’t alone; every Brewers hitter except for Arcia, who got all 3 of the hits Kyle gave up tonight, looked helpless. It was a masterful performance.

No way… no fricking way… don’t do it. I stood up. Of course, besides wanting Kyle to finish it, I had big points on the line in fantasy baseball; if Kyle were to finish with a complete game shutout, the points would be huge. In a game where Ross didn’t have much to do, he made his first impact on the season at that moment. In a moment where the previous manager… yes, we can say his name, Joe Maddon; still love you Joe!… may have pulled him, Rossy did the opposite. He left him in the game. Maybe he just wanted to get his first mound visit in… maybe he just wanted to scare Kyle… there was no way in hell he was getting pulled. I absolutely love the decision. In a day where other starters were pulled early, Kyle went the distance. Why not? It’s only 60 games this year. If this is any indication on how Ross will handle the staff, I love it. Let the starters go deep if they got it going. I don’t want to recall how many games pulling them early backfired on us…
Happy went deep; Rizzo went deep. 3-0 Cubs victory. Fly that fricking W flag baby!!! The Cubs are back. 60-0 here we come. World Series baby! Hahaha… Man, this one felt good. Seeing the Cubs finally play again; seeing them win again. On this night, my world felt a little more normal… besides the Cubs playing on a Friday night at home which they rarely ever do. But yes, sitting on the couch with the family, watching the Cubs play; whew… deep breath. It was a great ending to a day that ended up not being so great. I needed this. Welcome back boys… W!
