July 24, 2019: Back to the Rate

Hey Sox fans, what do you call the new park?  Do you still call it Comiskey?  Is there anyone that still calls it the Cell?  For me, it feels right to call it Sox Park.  I can’t believe anybody really calls it Guaranteed Rate Field; that sucks.  But whatever… if that’s going to lead to more money to spend on the team, then you gotta do it.  Whatever, but on Wednesday night, it was back to the Rate.

Didn’t go to a Sox game last year.  I’d have to double check, but I think I had been the previous 5 years.  Last time there, my son really liked the Kids Zone; what kid wouldn’t?  It’s absolutely awesome for kids, although I can’t imagine how crowded it gets for a weekend game, especially family day on Sunday.  For a weeknight game, it’s a little crowded…  Kids Zone that is, not the stadium.  OK, I’m not going to take the obvious shot at the Sox attendance; it’s just the facts.  But the stadium did fill up pretty nicely on this Wednesday night matchup vs another team with a bad record.  Who would come out on top in this marquee matchup?

It really didn’t matter.  This was a Father’s Day gift for my dad; it was 3 generations at the game.  That was the most important thing.  Of course we preceded our visit with a stop at Ricobene’s; best sandwich in the world if you ask me.  Then we grabbed the shuttle, and had some great conversation with our driver Lenny.  He tried to get us all the way to the stadium, but the traffic folks wouldn’t let us through.  That was fine… so we walked a block; a lot better than walking 9 blocks.  My dad had his Sox gear on.  I don’t own any.  My attire to the Sox game looks like this:  I wear any other Chicago sports gear… Blackhawks, Bulls, or Bears.  No, I don’t wear my Cubs gear in there; I would only do that if they were playing the Cubs.  It’s about respect in my mind.  Yeah, we have our teams; we love our teams.  But at the end of the day, we’re all Chicago, right?  I had a Jordan t-shirt on with my Bears hat.  My son doesn’t have any Sox gear either; was going to change that at the game, as we looked for a t-shirt.  Thought maybe a Southpaw t-shirt would be cool, since he is a “southpaw”.  No luck… maybe next time.

We got to our seats as the first pitch was being thrown; they were 1st row upper deck behind home plate.  Pretty good seats, but we wouldn’t be in them for long.  Walked to the Kids Zone after the 2nd inning; we were there until about the 6th.  The game was flying by… no runs through the first 6 innings.  We watched some from the concourse, then we sat by the right field foul pole, then we finished the game behind the Marlins dugout.  A couple beers, popcorn, nachos, and “dollar dogs” were all purchased.  The Marlins ended up hitting a 2 run homer in the 8th, while Abreu’s potential 3 run shot was robbed at the fence in the bottom.  2 guys on in the 9th with 1 out, but the Sox couldn’t do anything.  Even though I’m not a Sox fan, I was still a bit disappointed; couldn’t even scratch out a damn run… no fireworks?

But all in all, it was a really good time.  Like I said, spending time with my son and my dad… all of us hanging out together… that was the highlight of the night.  Maybe an annual tradition going forward?  There was another highlight:  I had the Marlins pitcher in fantasy baseball, and he scored a bunch of points for my team this week.  The Cubs had won earlier, so I was good… really good.  Until next time…
