July 24, 2018: The Cathedral

posted in: Cubs | 1

Now that we made it in the park, and had our Javy bobble heads, what’s next?  It’s 2 hours until game time, but that’s OK.  We were in there; we were back in the cathedral, and Wrigley never disappoints.

It looked so beautiful on this evening.  It’s primetime in Wrigley now.  These summer nights when Wrigley gets slammed.  The Cubs are playing well, the crowd is buzzing, the beers are flowing.  Yes, I could do this every night.  One day I will.  Getting season tickets, and actually going to every Cubs home game one year is on my bucket list.  I’d keep score every game too; I like to do that.  I need to teach my son how to.  No need for beers each and every time.  Just my seat and scorecard would be enough.  I would take different people with me each game too.  Of course my wife and son, but other family members, friends, neighbors.  It will be great.  And it really doesn’t matter where I sit either.  Yes, I’d rather not sit in the 500 level, but honestly, there is not a bad seat in the house.  We sat all the way down the left field line in the 200 level, but it was still awesome.  The seats don’t have to be “great”.  Just being in the park is.

I guess it was Authentic Fan night too; we got a bunch of signs and a couple t-shirts.  I laugh though.  I think, everybody wanting to get this stuff…  trying to prove they are authentic.  And there are a lot of us out there, no doubt.  But real authentic fans don’t need to say anything, although I do say a hell of a lot of stuff here.  And I do always represent my teams…  I was walking to work the morning before the game with my jersey on, since I would be going straight from work.  I thought, should I be wearing this to my job?  Maybe not, but… it’s who I am, and that’s going to have to work.  You can only be yourself…  anything else would be un-authentic.

It was finally game time.  As I looked up at the scoreboard, I saw the flags flying high above; I smiled again.  It’s always good to see that Cubs flag flying at the top of the standings; it wasn’t always like this.  For all the things we complain about, all the things we worry about, we really are living in the golden era of Cubs baseball.  3 straight NLCS appearances, a World Series title, and more to come!  Yeah, it was always fun to come to Wrigley, but the Cubs have never been this good.  I love it.

They laid an egg on this night.  You figured it might be a tough road with Farrell starting, although he has had some good stretches.  Down 5-0 after one… not even the Cubs with 32 comeback victories could make it back from this one.  Yes, we took the loss, but it was still fun.

In the bottom of the 8th inning, Maddon brought in Caratini, our backup catcher to pitch.  Down 7-1, why not?  He got the out, then after allowing a single to start the 9th, rolled a deuce; 2 outs in the 9th.  Then Joe made a move that whipped us into a frenzy; he brought in Rizzo for the last out.  He got it.

Nothing beats fun at the old ballpark.  Seeing Zobrist play catch before the inning starts; he was acting like he was pitching, with the big leg kick.  Seeing Baez so animated at 2nd between innings; everything he does is with flair.  Then Joe spicing it up… bringing in position players in a blowout loss to pitch… even Rizzo!  That’s what it’s all about.  It’s 1 loss out of 162; chuck it up, and keep it moving.. and remember… you’re playing a game in front of the best fans in the world in the greatest park in the world on a beautiful summer night.  What is there really to be mad about?  Go Cubs!

Losses are going to happen a lot during a 162 game season…usually about 30-40% of the time. So when you take one on the chin, might as well still have fun with it. Yes, the Cubbies never quit. They have come back so many times this year that we expect it all the time. Sometimes, it is just not meant to be. Playing in front of the greatest fans in the best ballpark is not to be taken for granted. These guys make millions playing a game most of us wish we could. Chalk up the L and get the W next game. GO CUBS GO!!!
