July 24, 2017: About Right

The Cubs were 8-1 in their last 9; the Sox had lost 9 in a row.  The Cubs were back in first place; the Sox have one of the worst records in the majors.  The Cubs were at home with Kyle Hendricks on the mound; the Sox were technically on the road with Miguel Gonzalez on the mound.  Who you got?

Whoever you got… whoever common sense and logic tells you to like in this series, go oppo.  Take the opposite and you’ll be happy.  That’s just how the Crosstown Series goes.  Like they say, throw the records out the door when the Cubs and Sox get together.  So when the Sox pulled off the 3-1 victory today, I was pissed… of course.  But I said to myself, that’s about right.

I was off today, so I actually got to watch a good part of it.  Gonzalez pitched well.  Hendricks did too, but you could tell he was a bit rusty, making his first start in about 2 months.  The Cubs couldn’t get the big hit; the Sox played long ball.  First game goes to the Sox.

Another decent bet, especially lately, is that the series will be split.  In this 21st year of the regular season crosstown matchup, there have been six times when the series was split.  The first two years a split was impossible, since there were only 3 games.  The last 2 years have been splits as well.  After this win, the White Sox own a 58-51 regular season series advantage over the Cubs.  They also have the biggest wins over the Cubs that nobody remembers back in the 1906 World Series; it was a 4-2 series win.  Wouldn’t it be nice if we met again?

That’s the plan.  The Cubs are already there, coming off the 1st World Series title in our lifetimes.  We are expecting them to be back at least a couple more times, but we don’t want to be greedy.  Meanwhile, the Sox are trying to be like the Cubs, and stack a bunch of prospects that will hopefully lead to sustained success.  Part of that is bad regular season performance, which the Sox seem to be well on track for this year.  I’m sure there are some Sox fans who don’t care about winning any games this year… except these 4.

These games always count.  I wasn’t as in to it as I thought I would be; what fun is it going to be beating up on this pathetic Sox team?  But then when that doesn’t happen, and this horrible Sox team beats the Cubs, that sucks.  Maybe the Cubs weren’t as in to it either?  Well, hopefully this loss will snap them back into it, and they’ll take the next three.

Beating the Sox would be doing them a favor after all.  I’m not so sure how I feel about that; I wonder how Sox fans would feel about the Cubs doing them favors.  I wonder how Sox fans feel about their team trying to copy the team they hate the most.  The Cubs laid out the blueprint, now all you have to do Sox is follow it.  Of course it’s not that easy, but the Cubs tried to show everybody the way, including their cross town neighbors.

So good luck copying the Cubs success, and congrats on your win today Sox.  Let it be the last one you see against us.  Go Cubs!

Tough start to the Crosstown Classic. The Cubs missed some chances. Gonzales pitched well enough and got the win. Hendricks was welcomed back to the rotation after a 2 month layoff. He didn’t do horrible, but he wasn’t as sharp as he can be. He will work his way back. The Cubs will bounce back. Enjoy the win and snapping the 9 game slide sox. Lackey, Arrieta, and Lester in the next 3. Time for the Cubs to take them all and show the sox just how far they have to go. The rebuild is in progress. The defending World Champions are here now. Time to push Chicago’s 2nd team further into the basement.
    GO CUBS GO!!!
