Saturday was another busy day, and I’m sorry to say that did not include a Cubs 4-6 year old game. The games were cancelled due to the downpour late Friday. I figured that. As we made our way to the park for practice on Friday night, the skies opened up. We still had practice though… in the gym. There were only 3 kids total, but it was still fun. Any time you get to play baseball, it’s fun. But, sorry to disappoint you… no blog of that Cubs variety this week.
As for the other Cubs, they had a Saturday afternoon tilt against the rival Cardinals. Again, running around here and there, I wasn’t really paying much attention to the game. I was getting text messages. “Lester perfect through 5” was one of them. I checked the score, and it was 0-0. Would Lester’s great outing go to waste?
My running around ended with my wife and I on the way to an evening on the rooftop. It was our annual rooftop party at work. As we dropped off our son, we headed downtown… with 670 locked in to hear Pat and Ron. When I finally settled in to listen, it was that 8th inning again.
I picked it up when there were 2 outs. Lester, trying to get through 8 shutout innings. And there it went… HR Cardinals. And wait, there’s more… back to back HRs Cardinals. I thought to myself, the second I turn on the game, just like the previous day, the Cubs start losing. That’s just bad timing… maybe I should turn on some music. Nah, I never thought that; I was locked in.

As we know now, the Cubs came back in this one, scoring 3 runs of their own in the bottom of that 8th inning. Two out hits by Zobrist, Bryant, and Rizzo, pushed the 3 runs that we needed for the W on this afternoon across the plate. It was glorious. The place was going mad, Pat was describing it in his beautiful way, and I was banging my hand on the steering wheel, yelling in happiness. The last run was the best.
Bryant scored from 1st base on Rizzo’s bloop double. It was 3-2, so I kind of get it, but the ball fell between, and in front of, Pham and Fowler. No way Bryant, even with his long, antelope like strides around the bases, would be able to score on that… not even with a running start would he make it. But he did! That’s one of the many things I love about Bryant. He is a complete player. He’s such a great base runner. You know, I think he could go 40-40 if he wanted to.
But the Cubs aren’t the base stealing type… but they still are the comeback type. The gene that we saw in this team the past 2 years… the one that came through in the biggest moments last October and November, is showing its face again. We waited for it… and it’s here.
What a big win. To bounce back after that shellacking on Friday afternoon… to even this series… against these bastards… man, was I happy. As if I didn’t have enough to be happy about on this 22nd of July…. Go Cubs!!!

Pretty crappy only 3 kids showed up to practice…doesn’t make sense that the parents sign these kids up and then don’t show…weird.
As for the Cubs, Lester pitched a gem. 10k’s in 7 strong. Unfortunately, wainwright was pitching just as well silencing the Cubs bats. That 8th inning was great, though. All run scoring done after 2 were out. A 2 out double by Zorilla scored JJ. Bryant gets a broken bat single to tie it up. Then Rizzo bloops a double into left center that somehow scores KB from first. Yes, he was off and running since it was a 3-2 count, but he never hesitated or stopped. He had to know with the outfield playing so deep that he had a shot. He got the wave to keep going and scored to give the Cubs a 3-2 lead. WD71 came in and slammed the door to stay perfect and even the series. Great W! Finish the red turds in the finale and welcome the sox to Wrigley!
GO CUBS GO!!!
