July 21, 2021: Not Without a Fight

Well, so much for that monotony… after lasting another 8 innings on Tuesday night in St. Louis, with the Cubs apparently left for dead, again, something crazy happened. Down 6-1, the Cubs put up a 6 spot in the top of the 9th inning to beat the Cardinals 7-6. Who saw that coming? Apparently, the Cubs will not be going down without a fight…

I had changed the channel, like I said, it’s been a pretty tough few weeks for us Cub fans. And no, I wasn’t watching the NBA Finals, but figured my wife and I would finish the most recent season of Atypical… pretty good show btw. Anyways, as we exited Netflix after the last episode, I saw Rizzo up to bat with the bases loaded and the Cubs down 6-2. My quick calculations told me a grand slam would tie the game up… hold on a second. Rizzo didn’t go deep, but he did keep the train moving with a walk, 6-3. Next up was free swinging Javy. For all the times I curse at Javy for bouncing in another throw to Rizzo or swinging at a pitch nobody in the major leagues can hit, he does have his moments, a lot of them… I know we haven’t forgotten. I always say, if he could only swing at strikes, and keep a laser focus on defense, this dude would be MVP; oh yeah, he was MVP back in the 2016 NLCS… Anyways, he comes up with some clutch hits as well… well, add another to the list, as he singled up the middle to cut the St. Louis lead to 6-5… Now this is getting good, but hold on… Happ is up next.

Hoping to see his name pop up when the Cubs next trade is announced, remembering a recent double play in a key spot, knowing his struggles this year, expectations were pretty low…. then it happened. He lined a shot down the right field line, giving the Cubs the lead. The only thing less probable than that would have been if Heyward hit it… Now I feel like giving Happ a hug… haha.

I’ll tell you… for all the negative mojo generated by the 11 game losing streak and the rumors of all-stars getting traded, this one… this one was much needed. I haven’t felt this good about the Cubs since the combined no-hitter in LA. You know that was almost a month ago??? From losing the series finale to Arizona to losing the series opener against St. Louis to getting shut down by another no-name pitcher who had 0 career wins on Tuesday, the weight was becoming unbearable. To come back like this, against a guy who has zero blown saves this year, against the team I hate the most in baseball, to pick up a game in the standings… to give us a feeling that maybe, just maybe this season hasn’t been or will not be flushed down the toilet… it feels good. With Kyle Hendricks on the bump tonight, maybe a 2 game winning streak? I’ll take what I can get… Go Cubs!
