This whole vacation I’ve been talking about… it was great, like I said. We did miss a baseball game though; my first as a coach, my son’s first as a player. Thought it was going to work out. It actually rained in Chicago on that Saturday; the game was postponed. But, it was rescheduled for the following Friday. We were back in town, but had some previously scheduled plans, so we still missed a game. It was good to be back this Saturday.
The good thing is I have two great assistant coaches. They’re two other dads, and they definitely held it down in my absence. It actually rained during the rescheduled game on Friday, but we were able to play 2 innings; at least it didn’t have to be rescheduled again. With all the rainouts this year, we’re playing every Friday and Saturday from here on out to complete all of our games. So much for practice…
That’s what made what happened this Saturday even more impressive. Most of the kids can hit off the tee; that’s easy, and something we actually have practiced. But hitting off my pitching in the 3rd inning of each game… we really didn’t get a chance to practice that at all. The deal is, 3 pitches from me; if they don’t hit one of them, they go to the tee. Not one kid hit off the tee in this game.

Each kid hit my pitching. OK, so two of them hit my 4th pitch, but still… really impressive. I was definitely a proud coach. I joked with my 2 coaches… “did you guys practice this while I was gone?” They said no; I told them they should have took the credit for that. Not using the tee at all during the 3rd inning… each kid hitting one of my pitches… that has never happened before.
I’m always a proud coach, more specifically, a proud dad with one of my players. He plays first base every first inning because he can catch. He did awesome in this game too. 4 outs we got in the 1st inning! He was jumping off the base, grabbing the throw, and running back to tag the base. Pretty cool to see him play so well. He hit well too. The hit off my pitching was a Schwarbomb… He hit it high into the air; it didn’t go that far, but still higher than I’ve seen anybody hit the ball… all about that launch angle… haha.
Yes, it was good to be back in the swing of things, at least with the baseball team. It was picture day too. Each kid took an individual picture, then it was time for our team picture. All the kids lined up, and all of the coaches. I knelt down right next to our star player; they’re all stars, but this one is special. I put my arm around my son, and he did the same, as we took our team picture for the year. It doesn’t get much better than that. Only 6 more games left…

Always feels extra special when you’re child does so well, especially when it results in a W. Win, lose, or draw, I always want my child to play well. It definitely makes me proud! Glad my nephew seems to be doing so good, too. Don’t like missing a game or practice, but that stuff happens from time to time. 6 games left…good luck finishing the year strong! GO CUBS GO!!!
