July 20, 2016: Guess Who’s Back

The MLB schedule is about to end for the date of July 20th.  Guess who’s back on top?

The crashing down of the Cubs season has been greatly exaggerated. The talk of an all-time team may have been premature, but at 20 games over and a .606 winning percentage, the Cubs are back atop the baseball world. It’s been a good start to the 2nd half.

Winning a series against one of the AL best in Texas was followed up by beating the Mets.  Four out of six out of the gate, and we’re ready to roll. I didn’t feel this way about 24 hours ago.

We lost an absolute heartbreaker to the Mets.  After loading the bases with nobody out, my son and I were jumping on the bed in anticipation of a comeback victory.  We had Familia where we wanted him again; maybe he had us right where he wanted us. He walked the tight rope again, as the Cubs couldn’t push across a run.  I slapped the bed; time to go to sleep.

I felt the hate. If I was able to write my blog that second, a hate file would have been submitted. I still planned to, until the Cubs bounced back and won the series. The hate had subsided. I was happy again.

This is how the next 3 months will be. Every loss crushing; every win amazing. It will help dictate a good day or a bad day. Seriously. It’s just the way it is.

Driving home from work today, I heard about the first move by Theo and company. Mike Montgomery, an under the radar left handed reliever, was acquired for Dan Vogelbach. It was a surprise only because he wasn’t being talked about as a potential trade piece. It wasn’t a surprise when I checked his numbers. A 2.34 era, almost a strikeout an inning, left handed batters hitting about .160 against him, a reasonable price with options to keep. Yeah, it turned out that Theo and team had done their homework.  I’m happy for this first move. I know the Cubs aren’t done.

Then I popped up the standings and saw we had retaken the MLB best record. I was even more happier. The win, the trade, and the standings had helped end my day in a good way.

What’s next?  A day off followed by 3 games in Milwaukee. Will there be another trade that goes down during the timeframe?  Not sure, but there will be another or two that happen before the deadline. It’s some exciting stuff.

The Cubs seem to be back to themselves.  The losing days behind us, the sky is the limit. I’m riding that wave again, until the next loss or two of course. But I’m on this ride for the ups and the downs.  It’s the 2nd half of the season, and I’m looking forward to every minute of it. Go Cubs!

Big bounceback win for the Cubs after they had familia and the mets on the ropes again and let them off. Get those blown opportunities out of the way now because come playoff time, the Cubs cannot fail.
Montgomery will be a welcome addition in the pen. Lefty arms are hard to come by, and he seems like he gets the job done, especially against lefties. Welcome to the Cubbie blue train…all aboard! GO CUBS GO!!!
