OK, it’s been a minute. This time, just like the last time, it was because we went on a trip, our second of the year, this time, the road trip variety. Of course when I think about road trips, I think about including a visit to another ballpark to see the Cubs play; this time would be the same deal. Although not our final stop, a trip down to Cincinnati to see the Cubs play the Reds on Friday night to start the 4th of July weekend was an easy call; I just knew we would help the Cubs break their losing streak.

At the time, the streak was at 6; this was built up with the last 3 in LA and the 3 in Milwaukee. The Cubs still sat in 2nd place, with the Reds having a golden opportunity to leap frog us. We had great seats. When I initially went to purchase them, there wasn’t a whole lot of seats that I wanted available, due to the capacity restrictions at the time. When I called to inquire, the guy told me wait until the morning, when the restrictions would be lifted; sometimes it does pay to phone first. I went in that next morning and found first row seats… yeah, right by the field, a couple sections down from the Cubs dugout on the first base side. Another tip: most visiting teams sit on the 3rd base line… in Cincy, the visiting team sits on the 1st base line. We’d been here before though…

I mean, we sat in this ballpark, with great seats to see the Cubs play the Reds. This was about 2 years ago; our seats were right by the Cubs dugout. Unfortunately, the Cubs never took the field as the game was rained out; that sucked. I ended up selling the tickets instead of making it back for a 10 hour round trip ride to see the make up game; I made some money on them. This time though would be different. The weather was absolutely perfect; no rainouts this time around. The game… well, it started off pretty good.

Alec Mills was absolutely dealing, and the Cubs scratched across a run against Sonny Gray. Gray has pitched very well against us, but because this was his first start off the IL, I thought he wouldn’t be in there long; I was right. Once we got to the Reds bullpen, it would be our game; I was wrong. Back to Mills though… Ross pulled him pretty quick in my opinion, with 2 runners on base, 2 outs, and Votto due up. He brought in Morgan, who looked good, but had yet to make it in the circle of trust. He promptly gave up a double to Votto, and the Reds took a 2-1 lead. But yeah, that Reds bullpen… we’re OK. The Reds bullpen shut us down and we lost the game, but hey, at least we got a cool fireworks show after the game.

It was a nice stadium; they had a nice area outside the ballpark with a bunch of bars and restaurants where everybody was hanging out. Inside, fans needed the scoreboard to prompt them to cheer; every time there were 2 strikes, the board flashed instructions. Honestly, for a packed house, the first of the season for the Reds, it was relatively quiet. Only for the Votto double and the last out did the stadium get loud. There were a ton of Cubs fans, but we didn’t have too much to cheer about. Yeah, not impressed with the Reds fans inside the stadium… pretty weak effort in my opinion, but not everybody can be Cubs fans… not everybody can play in a cathedral. Ok, I took my shot…

Yeah, that was it… one and done. The rest of our trip would begin in the morning, as we left the Queen City and headed East… to a city a bit bigger than that. NYC here we come…
