The second half of our night day doubleheader was played early Saturday morning. Then there was five…after six kids showed up Friday, we had one less on Saturday. Where was everybody at?
The second game of a doubleheader would be fun I think, especially if we were doing a beer an inning like the old days. What happens in the 7th inning of the first game of a doubleheader? Do they stop serving, or do they go all the way until the seventh inning of the second game? That would get pretty ugly, but don’t think we’re going there any time soon. You might get like the guy that rushed the field at Comiskey to go after the ump, or that guy who stole a hat from a bullpen pitcher at Wrigley, or maybe you’ll mercilessly heckle the bullpen pitchers for blowing a lead. Be smart out there people.
It would be nice to get a call or text to let me know the kid is not going to show for either practice or the game; is that too much to ask? The no call no show stuff is garbage. I know most of the kids are probably playing in their first league, but set the right example. Show some commitment. I understand folks will take a vacation and miss a game or two, but if you signed up for the league, try to honor that. Try to show the kids what it’s like to stick with something. Maybe I’m just old school.

Being a lefty who will eventually have some good height, that may be his position…besides pitcher of course. Well, that’s what I think at least. Maybe he’ll grow to like another sport more, like soccer, basketball, football, or hockey. He likes to play soccer. He wants to play that next on some days. Other days it’s basketball. We’ve played that a lot at the house. Football is kind of off the list. My wife is already nixing that. I say, well if he was quarterback it wouldn’t be so bad. Hockey is another fun at home sport we’ve played. I think signing him up for some floor hockey next may be perfect for him.
We did our best in the game. We got a couple outs. We got some nice hits. Although 13 kids is too many to have on the field, 5 is definitely not enough. Back at it next Saturday, where hopefully we’ll field a fuller team.
I’ll probably make the kids who were a no show run some extra bases in practice. I’ll be lowering the boom on them and their parents. Just kidding. Not yet. Still, I think I will remind them of what I told them at the start of the season. Call me if your kid can’t make practice or the game. Do you still have my number?

Pretty tough to play with 5 kids. Not sure why parents would sign their kid up to play and not show, especially with no notice. It makes no sense. Nowadays, these activities are not free. Parents have to shell out good money for their kid to enjoy whatever activity it is. Why do that and then not go? Yes, I know, things come up and happen that cannot be avoided at times. That is understandable, but then why not text, email, or call the coach to let him know they will not be there? It is common courtesy. Most coaches are volunteers trying to help out. Like with anything, communication is key. A 1 minute message is all it takes. Use common sense people. Communicate!
