July 2, 2016: Saturday Morning

posted in: Cubs, White Sox | 1

Up early on this Saturday morning.  As my wife heads into work, I decide if I should go back so sleep… but I don’t.  It didn’t matter anyways, because soon after, my son comes walking down the hallway.  We’re up now.

I was able to get in my blog from yesterday though.  What’s next?  Breakfast of course. The selection today was Cinnamon Toast Crunch.  Already in the sports mode… I usually am… I flipped on the radio, hoping to hear some sports talk; I guess 7am is too early.

OK, golf and soccer are sports, but none that I want to listen to guys talk about.  After I heard golf on the Score, I flipped to ESPN… and heard soccer.  I flipped back to the Score.  Then I flipped off… music it is.

Saturday morning is usually my chance to do some stuff around the house… dishes, swifter the floor, clean the fridge and cabinets…  I knock that out, and now the clock turns 8.  Inside the Clubhouse is coming on, and it’s time for some baseball talk.

It’s been rough sledding on both sides of town lately.  After going 1-6 last week, the Cubs bounced back to beat the pitiful Reds… setting up for a NLCS rematch.  The worst loss of the year followed by a beatdown has Cubs fans panicking.  On the South Side, the Sox have been playing much better ball.  The rough sledding part comes in when they look at the standings, and see Cleveland pulling away.  14 wins in a row for this team… don’t think they’ve lost since the Cavs won it all.  Cleveland is in their glory.  Screw them.

The good thing about today’s slate for Chicago’s baseball teams is that the aces are on the mound.  Sale with a 13-2 record, leads the majors, and will be starting in the All Star game.  Will the opposing pitcher in that game be Jake?  With Kershaw sidelined, it has to be Jake, right?  Well, he has struggled lately… he’s struggled so much that now he is only 12-2.  Calm down.

Jake is still the man.  I know he hasn’t been sharp lately, the walks are up, but come on… really?  We’re losing faith in Jake?  That was one of the topics early in this show…. the concerns about Arrieta.  Lester has been great this year, but I’m still taking Jake when it counts.  He matches up with Fat Boy Colon.  If the Cubs don’t win this game… we could be staring at another 4 game sweep at the hands of these Mets.

Is it time to panic with the Cubs?  I don’t think so.  Still a fat lead in the standings, they are still in good shape.  The Sox?  The division may be out of the question, but the wild card is still very much in play.  And remember who they got in that one game playoff… I like their chances if they can get there.

But Saturday morning isn’t about this blog or sports radio, it’s about father son time.  I was barely about to sneak this in, while getting pounded by numerous weapons, but we’re done… and now it’s time to play.  We got some time to burn before I take him to his baseball class in the park… and that’s what it’s about.  Signing off for now… Enjoy the holiday weekend.

No time to panic. Cubs got swept in ny with 2 blowouts and 2 one run games. Jake has not been himself lately. Lester got smacked hard too. Tough sledding for 1&2 vs ny. Slumps and losing streaks bound to happen, but being 20+ games above .500 still, is something to be happy about. Injuries are mounting a bit, which is a concern, but the Cubs are not. GO CUBS GO!!!
