July 19, 2024: WNBA

So, the WNBA is on the up and up, huh? Well, that’s good… for those folks who like to watch it. Heck, I don’t even like watching most of the NBA games nowadays, what makes you think I’d like to watch the WNBA?

Caitlin Clark for starters. She is one of those players that comes along and lifts up the entire brand. There is no denying this. Since she entered the league, the popularity has soared. Whether we’re talking TV ratings, clicks, or ticket prices for the games her team is involved in, the impact is tremendous. This positive impact will trickle down to all of the players in the entire league. All the talk about equal salaries etc… that’ll never happen #1, but with someone like this, the gap can be closed… a bit. Of course, we’re talking about all the money in that enables the NBA to pay the money that they do; that’s all it’s about. If the WNBA makes that much money, the ladies would get paid the same. Safe to say the WNBA will NEVER be as popular as the NBA??? Well, like I said, I don’t even watch a lot of the NBA other than the Bulls games… and the postseason of course… and I guess the summer league if nothing else is on… haha. OK, I watch it, but don’t really enjoy the product as much as I used to.

What about the Chicago Sky? I’m Chicago all day every day… surely I support them, right? Well, yes… from a distance I guess; certainly not one of the “big 4”. I’m not interested in paying serious money to go watch them play, that’s for sure. Catch a bit of game on TV, OK. They have improved their team, after falling off a cliff when they won that title. Angel Reese… what about me? People should want to see ME too… wah wah… She’s a solid player, no doubt; I love her hustling and grabbing boards, but let’s not get it twisted. The reason the WNBA has seen an uptick is because of one person, and it ain’t you Angel. But good luck to you and the Sky.

You know, if I had a daughter who was into sports, I’m sure I’d be into the WNBA a lot more; that’s not to say my son isn’t interested in the WNBA. I’ll go as far as he’d like to… or my wife I guess… haha. But for me personally, I’d rather watch something else… anything else almost… Nothing against watching girls play sports; I’ll be cheering on all the men and women in the Olympics in the upcoming days. Watching the girls from my son’s class play basketball… now THAT’S what I like.

Yes, even Caitlin Clark hasn’t caused me to jump onboard. It has raised my interest a tick, but… Good luck to the league; I hope they continue to grow in popularity. I hope they can be more successful, make more money, pay the players more money, and all that. Won’t get a dime from me though… unless my son really wants to go to a game, or my wife wants that Angel Reese jersey… haha.
