July 19, 2019: That Friday W

When you write stuff for as long as I have been writing stuff, I probably repeat myself a lot. Although the way I feel about some things certainly changes over time, there are other things that no matter how many times they happen, I feel the same way. It’s kind of like that with that Friday W.

It’s typically the first game of the series. It’s typically an afternoon game. Yeah, the results of that Friday series opening afternoon game at Wrigley goes a long way in determining how my weekend starts. Every weekend is great, don’t get me wrong. When Friday afternoon rolls around, I’m ready; I’m ready to be away from work, I’m ready to be home. This can’t be completely ruined… but when the Cubs lose this game, the start of the weekend just isn’t the same. The same can be said for every single Cubs loss; it can ruin a day or night, it can make it a little harder to get things going the next morning. Yes, it’s that long and winding road that we travel with the Cubs every summer. But when the Cubs win that Friday game… and when that win is a close, exciting game…. and when that win continues a hot streak of play for the Cubs… and when that win keeps us in first place, yeah, I love it. That’s the way to start a weekend.

I saw they were losing early, as I was winding down my work day. Then I got the text…. Cubs!!! Then my wife called me on FaceTime and showed me the Rizzo AB; she’s not so bad… and Rizzo ain’t so bad either. An opposite field grand slam to give the Cubs the lead 4-3. As I checked the score before leaving work, it was 5-4 Cubs thanks to a Baez HR. As I got off the train, the game was heading to the bottom of the 7th inning. As I walked in the door, the ball was bouncing out of the bleachers, as the Padres had tied it up in the 8th. Fricking Strop again…. he needs to get his stuff together. That Cishek, Strop, Kimbrel end to the game needs to be locked down… although I hear Morrow is getting closer. Anyways back to this glorious day. The Cubs would scratch across a run in the bottom of the inning, thanks to sloppy play by the Padres defense, to take the lead; by the way, I don’t care how it happens… big hits, bloop hits, errors… just win baby. Then Kimbrel came and shut it down. He did walk a guy… I noticed that if he doesn’t like a particular match up, he doesn’t give in. He has enough confidence to get the next guy; I’m good with that… as long as he gets his guy. Cubs win, Cubs win.

Yes, a beautiful way to start the weekend I say. The Brewers would go on to lose today, which always makes me feel happy. The Cardinals actually move ahead of the Brewers, 2.5 games behind us. It doesn’t matter. Keep playing like you are boys, and the Cubs will get the job done. I love it when we’re playing like we should be playing… when we’re winning. Another series to win this weekend. Go Cubs!
