After watching the semifinal game on Sunday, I was ready to tune into the final on Monday night, but I was at the Cubs game, remember? I guess I’d just have to check the highlights later.
I was pissed that the Cubs game started at 6pm. Trying to get there on time after work, dropping my son off, was going to be tight. Damn national TV games. But, we made it on time, and more importantly, the game was done around 9pm. By the time we walked to D’Agostino’s, the Bulls were in the 4th quarter of the summer league championship game. This is where the story continues.
The opponent was the Wolves; Thibs was sitting in the stands, ready to get that first ounce of revenge against the franchise that let him go. Down the stretch, neither team could buy a bucket. The game remained tied late in the 4th when some guy from Minnesota hit a 3 pointer from like 3 feet behind the 3 point line. Unbelievable. This is how the Bulls quest for the summer league title would end. Undefeated until the very end; coming up one game short. There was still 3 seconds left…
That was enough time for summer league coach Pete Meyers to draw up a play. The ball ended up in the hands of our first round pick, Denzel Valentine. Not sure how you all felt about that draft pick at the time, but after this night, you may feel a little different. He turned and buried a 3 ball practically at the buzzer to tie the game; the Wolves couldn’t do anything with the 0.2 seconds left, and we were going to OT. When that ball went through the hoop, I clapped loudly. Yeah, it was only a summer league game, but I was pumped.

OT began with only 2 minutes on the clock. Different rules obviously. I read that if it had went to a second OT, it would have been whoever scores first. Wow! What a way to win or lose a final game. It didn’t make it there.
The two minutes flew by, and again the game was tied…and again the ball was in Valentine’s hands. Yep, this time from the top of the key, he turned and this time left triple zeroes on the clock, as the ball hit nothing but net. Another loud clap, and the Bulls were summer champs.
Didnt think this is how we would get the 7th trophy…haha. Obviously, not the same as the Larry O’Brien, but nice nonetheless. It was especially nice considering the crazy offseason the Bulls have had. It gave this fan a ray of hope for this year. It was a very nice moment.
Who would have thought…that there would be that much excitement over a summer league championship game that I didn’t even knew existed until a few days ago. Yeah, I was excited; yeah, I’m a little bit more excited about this year. Still ways to go, but it was a nice surprise. It was nice to see the Bulls win something. Hopefully that’s only the start…

The young Bulls won a meaningless summer league title, but hopefully they got some meaningful experience. Summer league is nothing compared to real nba hoops, but it is something they can feel good about as well as something for fans to be excited about and look forward to.
