July 19, 2015: Passing Ships

posted in: Cubs, White Sox | 3

Ok, so the Atlanta Braves aren’t what they once were, and the Royals are one of the best teams in baseball.  Still, as the results from the weekend rolled in, it feels like the Cubs and Sox are like passing ships in the night.

These ships are going in opposite directions of course. The Cubs are headed upstream. Back to 8 games over, and with a week of games against the Reds and Phillies, the Cubs are in position to reach double digits over.  After a Friday night loss, they came back to win the series. That was the Jon Lester we expected. After a mediocre first half, he came out blazing in his first game after the break.  When I saw the “flirts with no hitter” scroll across the bottom of the screen, I knew it was a good thing. If he could keep this up…  Maybe he can regain the title of staff ace.  That current title holder took the hill on Sunday afternoon. Let’s just say he held serve in that battle. 8 scoreless.  When he’s on the mound, I make a little extra effort to watch. The guy is a stud. Cubs win and head to Cincy.

The Sox didn’t quite get the desired results in their “showdown” with the Royals.  After splitting a doubleheader on Friday, they dropped the next two; at bare minimum you needed a split here. I did see they made a comeback on Saturday only to fall short in extras.  They remain in the cellar; is it time to sell?

It’s got to be a tough call, especially when you have the kind of offseason the Sox had. To come to the realization that it’s just not gonna cut it, can’t feel good. Maybe there is still a belief. Maybe they stick to their guns. Maybe it’s another mediocre season for the sox. It’s a tough balance. You want to be competitive every year.  You never want to give the impression that you’ve thrown in the towel for the year, like the Cubs did the previous three. It’s tough on a fan base, especially one that doesn’t show up to the park. You put together a product that is supposed to perform and it’s just not working out. The trade deadline is approaching. I still think the Sox are better than this.  What do Rick and Kenny think?

The Cubs decision is a better one to make, yet still not that easy. They need another starter. A veteran bat would help too. Do you trade some of the future away for this year?  It’s a fine line. I think at this point we can say the Cubs will be in the conversation; is this the year?  I hope so, at the same time, I don’t want to throw away the bright future that we worked hard to set up.  You try to increase the odds of hitting that target by getting multiple shots at it. Yet, all I want is that one World Series title… At this point, I have to trust in Jed and Theo. They’ve made mostly good decisions so far. They have and will make mistakes though. What is the next move?

These next 12 days will tell a lot of the story. We’ll see how this 2015 season develops. I’m happy to be on the ship I’m on; maybe the other one still has a chance to reverse course. Either way, no time to waffle; it’s all aboard full steam ahead.

Cubs are in the driver seats now. Trade for a pitcher that can fix into a team with no issues. Nothing big like Cole Hammels, but maybe a Yovani Gallardo or Mike Leake or even Jeff Samardzija, if the price is right.

The veteran bat should be a Marlon Byrd to help out the young outfielders or even A-Ram to help Bryant deal with his rising popularity.

Bottom line, the front office can’t mess this up, unless they reach and try and trade a core player. In that case, make no moves at all.

A move here or there can make or break the season. A starter, reliever, and an experienced playoff vet would be my choices. Assuming the Cubs make the playoffs, not having a lot of playoff experience actually works in their favor. They are young and know no better. They havent failed under the pressure before. Hopefully, they won’t either. Keep playing good baseball and let theo work his magic. When all is said and done, let’s hope the Cubs get better and finish the year strong, regardless of what is done at the deadline. The playoffs are within reach…make it happen! GO CUBS GO!!!

How bout those Reds! Starters?? You need a bullpen. Have to give up something, to get something, that’s how it works. Nothings free boys! Even if they get there, every team will be highly motivated and gunning for them cause the press clippings will be overflowing for the loveable losers. HAHAHAHA! You’ll know what you got when the pressure begins to build, its only July. So far, not bad.
