They did it. They actually listened to what I, and many others who think they know better, told them to do. Rick Hahn traded Frazier and Robertson, the final pieces to move as part of the White Sox overhaul. Or are they???
Melky, Abreu, Avi? There are more pieces to move, but you have to keep some guys don’t you? I don’t think anyone can argue with the amount of heavy lifting Hahn has done this year, taking the Sox from last to first in the minor league system rankings. Well, I still argue that they could have got more for Sale, but other than that, they certainly stacked up the prospects. I read somewhere 10 of the top 68 now? I’m sure there are differences in the rankings by all the publications, but one thing is undeniable; the White Sox have one of the best farm systems in the majors.
People want to give Hahn the GM of the year award now. Although he has done great, the true measure of a GM is winning at the professional level. He certainly has setup the team to do so, and should be recognized for his efforts, but GM of the year? Let’s reserve that for a few years from now, when the White Sox look like the Cubs; multiple playoff appearances and multiple World Series titles. Yeah, ok, I know, the Cubs have only won 1… so far.
Yes, the Sox are doing their best Cubs impersonation. Get so many damn prospects that even if 50% hit, you’ll still have a tremendous young team. The Cubs hit at a higher percentage, which some may call luck. Ahhh, I remember those days, not so far back, where the Cubs were crap and we focused on the farm system. Yeah, I like these days better, and that’s what the Sox have to be patient for.

It’s not easy, but it’s worth it… if you win it all. Of course, stocking the farm system isn’t the only thing to do as part of the rebuild. You need to eventually spend some money and strike on the free agent market. You have to bring in some veteran clubhouse presence to balance the whole thing out. You need a manager that will help change the culture of the big league club. You need a GM to make that a priority throughout the system. Yes, and you do need a little bit of luck if you may, like a 17 minute rain delay for example. It’s not easy to win it all. There’s only 1 team that can make that claim every year; all the other teams, trying to achieve that same goal, will come up short, each and every year.
I thought it was nice timing to bring up Moncada too. The prized piece back in the Sale trade, was to make his debut on Wednesday against the Dodgers. It’s all about bringing these young guys up at the right time now. And with potentially the final pieces being traded, it was perfect timing to bring up a big part of the future.
Nice work Hahn, although you will only truly be judged by the end result of the White Sox performance in Guaranteed Rate Field. You can try to follow the Cubs blueprint, as many teams will. Good luck completing the journey. See you in the World Series in about 3 years?

The sox are doing what they have to do. Get rid of these older veteran players and stack the minors with youngsters. Quite a nice haul for sale, Quintana, Robertson, and frazier. Will any of these guys pan out? Time will tell, but there is nothing wrong with loading up on young talent with the hopes that some hit it big in the majors. Are the sox done this year? I am not so sure. Maybe melky is next? I don’t think the sox will part with Abreu or avi, but who knows. Abreu does not seem like the same player the last 2 years, although he is still valuable. Avi is having an all-star career year. Will it happen again or should the sox make the most of his value and part ways? More questions for Hahn to answer this year. He is on the right track. Not much more he can do than building from the bottom up. Once he finishes that, it will be time to switch gears and put the big league product back on the map with a key free agent signing. Goodluck sox and Hahn…the road is not easy and there is no guarantees, even with so many young pieces. Stay the course. GO CUBS GO!!!
