July 18, 2016: Wrigley In The Summer

posted in: Cubs | 1

It doesn’t get much better, let me tell you.  I’m keeping that “summer” theme going in my blog titles, for those that notice, with a Wrigley In The Summer edition.  I was there in person on Monday night… freaking awesome.

Just being there… really, anywhere in the stadium… I don’t care, give me behind the pole seats.  It’s electric.  Wrigley is always pretty crowded in the summer.  Tickets get harder to come by; open up those wallets.  It’s vacation season, and a good percentage of those visiting Chicago in the summer try to include a Wrigley stop.  It’s a fun time.  Restaurants, bars… inside, outside the stadium… you can’t NOT have a good time, well… unless you are truly a Cubs fan and they lose.  That kind of puts a damper on things.

But this year, it’s been much more winning than losing.  Wrigley in the Summer is great anytime, for me, baseball at its purest, but when the Cubs are good… wow.  It gets better exponentially.  True Cub fans… key word “true”, are the best fans in the world.  We get a bad rep in general because there are all these other people… out of towners just having a good time walking around with their team’s gear on, people just there to party, the corporate crowd…  But the true Cubs fans… we are the best.  We know the inside and outside of baseball, especially our Cubs.  We’ve got the scars to prove it.  We’re all ready to celebrate something we’ve never seen.  We haven’t seen many teams like the one the Cubs are fielding nowadays.

Could this be the year?  The constant question is there.  I was just happy to beat the Mets.  I was thinking a Hate File was coming if they beat us last night, but that’ll have to wait.  It’s only a small payback for the last 2 series sweeps at the hands of the Queens boys.  I’d like to win this series, but more importantly, beat them when it counts… if we get that chance come October.

That Rizzo home run was one of the best moments.  After a tough battle with Matz, he hit a ball that exploded off his bat; we knew it as soon as he hit it.  The outfielders barely moved.  High fives for everybody.  Another one of my favorite moments at every game in Wrigley, is the 7th inning stretch.  Don’t care how old you are, almost everybody is singing that song in the middle of the 7th.  This time we were led by Harry Caray on the video board.  It’s just great.  I can’t believe some other parks don’t even sing it… like US Cellular where I was a couple weeks ago.  (It’s almost time for the Cross-Town classic… lining my shots at the White Sox up)

But back to this fine summer night… beers were a flowing, enjoying the great company I was with, holding out on the food (minus a jumbo bag of peanuts) until we hit D’Agostino’s after the game.  Yeah, it doesn’t get much better.  I wish I could just bottle of that feeling, but you know what, there is really no need.  Anytime I step inside this cathedral, it’s another great experience… when will I be back?

Have some tickets lined up for August 2nd.  After that, it will have to be a September game.  I’m going to try to take my shot at some tickets, hoping to see a clincher.  Long way to go between now and then…

But I will be back… at least 2 more times, with of course that chunk of money waiting to be spent on a World Series ticket.  Will this be the year?  I’m pretty sure Wrigley in October or November would trump Wrigley in the Summer; I hope to find out soon.

Awesome game and night. Wrigley is definitely the mecca for baseball fields, and all of the improvements being made are just making it better. The Cubs came through on this night with a W vs the mets as rizzo’s blast was a no doubter. Would love to have season tickets, especially now and over the next few years as these young Cubbies are good, and they will only get better. Cubs fans are the best. We get a bad rap but all stadiums have those who are there just to be there. True fans like us know better, and I cant wait to be back…Ws only please!
