July 17, 2017: ATL

After the Cubs swept the first series after the All Star break in Baltimore, they headed down to Atlanta.  Surprisingly, Atlanta has a pretty good record.  Seemingly in rebuild mode, their record isn’t that different than the defending champs.  At the beginning of the season, this would have seemed like a mismatch; the records at this point tell us different.

We thought about heading down to the ATL for this series.  The flights down there are relatively cheap.  Plus, it’s a brand new stadium.  We’d be able to cross that one off the list.  I did go to the old stadium…

I’ve travelled down there a few times for business; great city by the way.  I actually worked about 20 minutes south of Atlanta, but headed up to the city for things to do during my free time.  The Varsity I think it was called, was a place that I checked out.  It was an old school fast food/drive in restaurant that had some famous orange drink; the name is escaping me right now.  It was OK.  The Vortex was another place that we hit.  I had heard about it on one of those food shows; those burgers were great.  I had the Elvis burger, with banana and peanut butter.  My buddy had the triple bypass burger; not sure if that was the exact name, but it was close.  It was a double burger between 2 grilled cheese sandwiches with a fried egg and like 12 pieces of bacon.  He was in heaven with the burger in one hand, coupled with alternating drinks of his beer and puffs on his cigarette.  Yeah, you could still smoke down there at the time.

The best place to eat was a place called Phil’s Southern Diner.  Going to lunch one day, one of the local managers drove me past a number of chain places.  I told her, I want to eat somewhere that I can’t eat at anywhere else.  So we drove, and drove, and next thing you know, we were in a very rural looking area.  So, we turned around.  As we headed back, I saw it:  a little rinky dink diner in a strip mall.  Yes, that’s what I’m talking about.

Where were we?  Oh yeah, the old Atlanta stadium…  We headed to a game on one of those nights; they were playing the Nationals.  We walked right up to the box office, and bought two $50 tickets a handful of rows behind the visitor’s dugout.  It was great being at a baseball game NOT stressing out over every pitch like I do with the Cubs.  It was a nice stadium.

Yeah, we didn’t make it down for this series, but we will make it down to the ATL at some point.  We will check out that new stadium.  But back to the series… the Cubs took the opener to make it 4 in a row.  Would they keep it up?  By now, we know.

Been down to Atlanta, too, and also visited Turner Field. It was pretty nice so I can only imagine how the new ballpark is. We used to call Turner Field Wrigley South because there were so many Cubs fans there, especially years ago when they were in the playoffs. It sure seemed like the trend continued on this trip as there were so many Cubs fans there. Nothing new really. Cubs fans travel very well all over, but there are always a few places that seem to have more than others…Atlanta is one of them. I loved the Braves in the 90s. Maddux, Glavine, smoltz, avery…what a pitching staff. And who didn’t love the tomahawk chop? That was awesome when the whole stadium did it. They still do it now. Fortunately for the Cubs, this trip to Altanta was a whole lot similar to their trip to Baltimore. The Cubbie blue train is rolling on the road…GO CUBS GO!!!
