On Tuesday, it was another member of the 2016 Chicago Cubs that departed from the team. Mike Montgomery goes to the Kansas City Royals for Martin Maldonado. Thanks for the memories Mike.
Obviously the first thing that comes into all of our minds is his first career save in Game 7 of the 2016 World Series. Yes, he was on the mound for that last groundball to Bryant, who slipped, and threw it high to Rizzo for the 3rd and final out… the out that erased decades of pain and misery. Yes, it was Mike Montgomery on the mound for THAT pitch. For that reason, he will always be in our hearts; he will be a Cub for life. Same goes for all the guys on that team; I’ll never forget any of them.
Do you remember Mike’s first moment as a Cub? I do. He came over from Seattle and made his first appearance in Milwaukee against the Brewers. He gave up a 3 run homer and the Cubs lost the game. Nothing like making a good first impression. But nobody remembers that, and rightfully so. When you get the last out to end the longest drought in major sports history, I think that will be your #1… really the one and only moment that will carry you. It’s like those one hit wonders… Mike, you definitely have that nailed.

He was a spot starter, a long reliever; he came in and got big outs, and even got some big hits. He was our swiss army knife in the pen. Problem was, is that Mike wanted to start; that’s been his position since day 1. He did start… at times… but was never a regular member of the starting rotation. By going back to the Royals, the team that drafted him which I did not know, he will get that opportunity to run out there every fifth day and toe the rubber. Best of luck to him. The addition of Maldonado is fine; hopefully this does not mean that Willson will be out for an extended time. I do have a feeling that this is only the first of a handful of moves that the Cubs will be making in the next couple weeks. There may even be a surprise or two in there. I’m ready. Trust in Theo.
But back to Montgomery for a second, him leaving brought out all the World Series highlights. They asked him about that in the locker room after the game; he knows how special that was… we all do. Watching that last pitch never gets old. That’s the thing about winning it all… nobody can ever take it away from you. No matter how old it gets, and no matter how old I get, it will always be; winning that World Series was the ultimate. Mike was part of that; for that, we thank you. Good luck Mike. Go Cubs!
