That Sunday after the game was our first day without any plans. Well, actually the only thing that was planned was getting our free breakfast… and watching the World Cup final.
Yeah, we got into the World Cup pretty good. I told my son the next time the World Cup would be on is 4 years from now; that’s why it’s so big… like the Olympics. I thought we were rooting for Croatia together, but he flip flopped before the game and rooted for France with Mom. France was definitely the most talented, and it showed in the end, as the celebrations kicked off. Now the rest of our day…
We strolled along the beach in La Jolla. The waves were awesome. They were so strong, I really didn’t want my son to get in there; he played in the waves that rolled up onto the sand. I went in, for a bit. Then as I looked back to my family, I got hit with a wave I had no idea was coming; it knocked me straight to the ground. I love the ocean.
So we walked… through the sand, around the seaweed, up the rocks, and back down to the beach. It was fun. We ended up going all the way to the Cove, where the seals were. We were able to get up close and personal with them. The seal pups playing around; the other guys laying around. This big guy started making noise as he made his way straight towards us. On the other side of us was another big guy, who started making his way towards us. We were in the middle of what I thought was going to be some action. We strolled away… nothing happened though. It was cool to be around so many seals out in the wild like that.
That was pretty much it for Sunday. More time in the pool, which was a daily thing before retiring for the evening. Finally, a relaxing type day. On Monday, we headed into San Diego again, this time to the USS Midway. Never been aboard an aircraft carrier before. It was enormous. 4500 folks would be on this boat at one time, with an average age of 19! 75 planes fit on the top, with room for an additional 25 below to be worked on. It was a floating city, with its own medic, dentist, post office. Wild stuff.

After getting another round of fish tacos, we were back at the room for the next “scheduled” event: the Home Run Derby. I like watching it every year, but especially this year. Baez and Schwarby would be representing the Cubbies. I liked Schwarby to win this one; I didn’t think Baez would go as far with his violent swing.
With Schwarber already advancing, we watched as Baez put up double digits. He got beat by Muncy from the Dodgers, bastard. We then hit the pool… again. I asked my son if he wanted to see Schwarber move on; he wanted to stay in the pool. All good.
My wife gave us the update as Kyle advanced to the finals. Again I asked my son; again we stayed in the pool. Future Cub Harper ended up beating him out in the Finals; heard he cheated. But, again, it’s all good.
Thankfully, my wife checked the calendar, and found out that we were actually leaving the next day; I had in my mind that we were leaving on Wednesday… haha. Last day before heading homeward.

Another World Cup in the books. I did not want France but oh well. See you again in 4 years. Hopefully, the US can make an appearance!
Nothing like the mountains and oceans! Just awesome to be around when you can.
I had Schwarby winning it, too, but it was not meant to be. Harper did cheat, if you want to call hitting the next pitch before the balls hit the ground, in a home run derby, but all good, we knew he would win in his hometown. But will it be his long term hometown? I don’t think so. Will the nats trade him before the end of the year to get something back? Or are they confident in signing him long term? Who knows. Maybe the Cubs will be a good landing spot for him…imagine the possibilities!
