July 15, 2022: Quarantine Life

How many times can I watch the Cubs lose? Surely there’s something more to quarantine life than that. Yes, there is. I need to take advantage of this, and watch some of my favorite movies. It all started Thursday night with The Fugitive; I absolutely love that movie. All the real Chicagoan cameos, including Otis Wilson early on in the flick. Of course, all the scenes filmed in Chicago help, but Harrison Ford, native Chicagoan btw, has to be one of my favorite actors. Han Solo, Indiana Jones, and Richard Kimble… he’s done some stuff. Tommy Lee ain’t too bad in this one either. One of my favorite scenes is where he was “working” in the hospital as a janitor, and had to take that sick kid to a floor; he checked the X-Ray, changed the diagnosis, and saved the kid’s life. What a guy!

Let’s keep this movie train rolling. What movie just happened to be put on NetFlix? Good Fellas! Yeah, not sure why this movie didn’t get Martin his best picture award; it’s way better than the Departed, and I love Departed too. Sad to see Ray Liotta aka Henry Hill in this one. Loved seeing Tony Sirico in his role aka Paulie from Sopranos. Lot of Soprano characters in that flick. Obviously Karen, Spider… saw that Carmine is in there too; he was at the table during the famous “what do you mean I’m funny” scene. Good Fellas does have kind of a depressing ending, where Henry rats, the boys go away, and he ends up in Arizona. All the drug use down the stretch… it was just a matter of time before things blew up. Still, one of my favorite mafia flicks of all time.

I thought, what can I watch next? Rounders… yeah, that’s the ticket. Of course, nobody had it on for free, but I did get some “alternative” suggestions. I went with 21. Not quite the level of Rounders, but still a very good movie. I mean, it’s Vegas baby, blackjack, partying… Yeah, nothing wrong with that. Although this “genius” wasn’t too smart when it came to stashing his money in his dorm room; over 300K in the ceiling, really? Anyways, this one did have a great, surprise ending that I really liked; it had some pretty good tunes throughout as well. And yeah, I know Kevin Spacey has issues, but he is a very good actor; great in this one as well. Not one of my all time favs by any means, but I would recommend it.

Have to get back to one of my favorite movies of all time; Heat fit that bill. DeNiro and Pacino… Godfather 2 reunited, as they face off in this super crime drama. Besides the obvious bank scene, full of scenes from downtown LA where I used to work, the one where they stopped for a cup of coffee before the big day… just great. Love Kilmer, Ashley Judd in this one too; they could have picked another broad to be Pacino’s wife in this one though… brown bag time. Kind of a tough ending… with everyone rooting for “the bad guy” to win, the ending was well, I guess what we should have expected. If only he didn’t turn off the freeway to get Wayne Gro…

OK, not much quarantine left… what’s next?
