And there’s a drive, way back, it could be, it might be… it’s a sacrifice fly. Unfortunately, that’s one of the most memorable moments in Joc Pederson’s Cubs career. Unfortunately, this also feels like it could be the slogan for the rest of the Cubs season. The first domino has fallen as Joc Pederson was dealt to the Atlanta Braves.
My first feeling was relief. Not necessarily relief that Joc was finally gone; he wasn’t that bad. I didn’t like the pickup initially, then I started liking the fact that I was wrong when he got hot, then he kind of returned to just an OK acquisition. Regardless, I didn’t have a burning desire to trade him, like I have for Happ and Heyward. The relief comes from seeing his name vs somebody else’s name. I’m totally fine with this first “sell” by the Cubs… I’m scared to see who is next though…
Here’s a quick thought. Extend the All Star break throughout the following weekend and force the MLB to make all its trades before the 2nd half begins. How cool would that be? Besides making it a clean break, and allowing all teams to start the 2nd half with their “new” teams, it would be an occasion. Kind of like Black Friday… “Trading Week” begins in the MLB this week after an entertaining Home Run Derby and All Star week. Which of your favorite players will be traded? I kind of like it. Instead, we’ll have to sit here on the edge of our seats the next, what, 15 days, to find out which jersey of ours will no longer be current.

After the initial “whew, it was only Joc”, I thought don’t tell me that’s Rizzo’s replacement. I don’t know anything about that guy besides the position he plays, and whatever blurbs I read right after the trade. Honestly, I don’t care who we got back, but I will say this. Joc felt like a rental anyways; to get somebody back for him is great… besides the fact it is a symbol of the fading Cubs season. To think that this dude is Rizzo’s replacement, feels like shit. I’d rather think of him as a trade piece in our next acquisition.
Instead of going, going, gone, maybe the title of this blog should have been “who’s next?” You know, just waiting for that next shoe to drop. I keep trying to rationalize it NOT happening, like maybe this is just all some act to trick the rest of the MLB, hahaha… but no, it’s happening. Instead of seeing a player who I just got to know, the next time I get a text about a Cubs trade, it may be someone who is forever etched in my heart… I hate this feeling.
But for now, we turn our attention to the powerhouse Diamondbacks as our #1 starter will take the mound on Friday night, hoping to start the season with a W. What if the Cubs rattle off 6 straight wins to start the 2nd half; does that change anything? Hey, I can hope… I can hope that Joc is the only guy that gets dumped, or a bit more realistic, I can hope the next guy is somebody I don’t care that much about either. Let me believe it, if only for a second… Go Cubs!
