Monday was our first of three matchups with the best team in the league. Remember, the first contest resulted in a 20-1 blowout. I was hoping to keep the kids’ morale up this week… anticipating some rough games. We were up first.
After the first two batters made outs, we got back to back doubles, the second one being my son, to score a run and actually take the lead 1-0!!! We’re beating the Pirates!!! I asked the umpire to call the game at that point. The lead would be short lived. Once their half of the first inning was done, we were looking at a 6-1 deficit. At the end of the 2nd inning, it was an 11-1 deficit. The blowout was in progress. Then came the 3rd inning. It was at that point where I knew our kids were interested in putting up a fight. We started off the top of the 3rd with 5 consecutive hits, which resulted in 4 runs. We scratched one more run across and now trailed 11-6; that was a fun inning. The kids were high fiving each other, the parents were cheering. We had put a dent in their armor… and given our kids a much needed boost of confidence. We would get outscored the rest of the game as well. We would end up losing 18-9, which is a whole lot better than 20-1. I was extremely proud of our team.

Only one kid didn’t hit the ball, and that kid had hit the ball in the past. We had our girl who hadn’t hit the ball all season make contact. Funny enough, it was a foul ball; even funnier, she hit the next pitch, this time fair. Unfortunately it was an out, but we didn’t act that way. We celebrated that moment. Now, all of our kids have made contact. We had another first. During kids pitch, stolen bases are allowed. We haven’t thrown out a runner all year. For that reason, I put our best catcher behind the plate in the 4th inning, which is the first inning of kids pitch, and my son at 3rd base, so we have somebody who is going to catch the ball if/when it’s thrown down there. There was a wild pitch, and the kid from 2nd broke to 3rd; he did get a late jump. Our catcher gunned it down there, my son caught it on a bounce and tagged him out. We celebrated the heck out of that moment as well.
I was talking to one of the other parents; I kind of compared it to my golf game. It’s really non-existent, but I do try to get out at least once a year. Why do I keep golfing? Besides typically being a family event, it’s about those couple good shots I hit each round. For our kids, this year, it’s about these moments. It’s about one of our kids fielding it cleanly and throwing to first to get an out. It’s about making contact for the first time. It’s about stealing our first base. It’s about throwing somebody out on the base paths. It’s about catching the ball on the fly for the first time. It’s about scoring our first runs. These are the moments that will keep the kids into it. These will be the moments that motivate our kids to keep playing, to keep trying to get better… and we will… we have. Today was a good day.
