July 15, 2018: West Coast W

I’ve been to a fair number of Cubs road games.  There are always a lot of Cubs fans; this was going on well before the long awaited title in 2016.  But on this Saturday night in San Diego, it seemed a bit different.  You know, when you see somebody else in Cubbie gear, you nod to them, or say Go Cubs, or give them a high five.  I couldn’t do that here.  You know why?  Because it was almost ALL Cubs fans!  I had to look for Padres fans… in their own home stadium.  Maybe it was just the side we were sitting on… the Cubs side, the 3B line.  That entire section of the stadium was filled with Cubs fans.  It was pretty crazy.  It was pretty cool.

The game didn’t start off so well.  As I took a quick walk after the Cubs hit in the 1st, the Padres fans got a chance to cheer first.  Hosmer took Hendricks deep, of course in the first inning.  2-0 Padres.  I guess we’ll have to see another comeback victory.

Happy started the charge with a solo blast; on the board!  We then had to take our customary walk around the entire stadium.  My son and I were off.  The coolest thing about this stadium is that everything is outdoors… everything is wide open.  We looped around home plate and headed down the right field line, stopping in every store along the way… buying nothing… haha.  As we headed into the outfield, we walked behind the scoreboard.  That’s where we were when Schwarby went deep to give the Cubs the 3-2 lead.  My son was running around in a big circle in celebration of the Schwarbomb.

We got back to our seats, and we had the lead.  It only grew from there.  Baez got a big hit, as he laced a double into the left field gap.  We were going nuts.  Baez also provided some later innings heroics, when he took one out deep to right center.  We were all chanting, Javy, Javy, Javy!  I thought for a second we were going to get him to come out for a curtain call.  How cool would that have been?  A curtain call, on the road!?!

The Cubs piled it on.  We were chanting to get to 10, and they made it.  11-6 was the final score.  It was a fabulous game.  Definitely one to remember.  After the game, all the W flags came out… again, just crazy how we took over this stadium.  Then a faint Go Cubs Go rendition broke out.

The Cubs had taken sole possession of first place before they even took the field on this evening, after a double header sweep of the Brewers by the Pirates.  So, yes, these were our first place Cubs, and yes, they showed us why.  It was oh so sweet.  It was great to bring home that West Coast W.

The Cubs ended up sweeping the Padres in this final series before the All Star Break; they would hold a 2.5 game lead.  So much for all that worrying we did in the first half.  Haven’t even clicked on all cylinders yet… that’s the good thing.

The better thing was hearing my son try to lead the charge of “Let’s Go Cubbies” inside the stadium that night.  I just smiled, and yelled with him, trying to get it going; I think we did actually start it one time.

I popped my son up on my shoulders as we walked back to the car.  He was sleeping as soon as we got on the freeway.  We were back at the hotel about 20 minutes later.  This Cubs win topped off the first 5 days of our vacation.  Thanks Cubs!

11-6 Cubs W in person is a sWeet game to be at. I’m telling you, I thought 90% of the people in Petco all weekend long were Cubs fans. It is amazing how well Cubs fans travel. They always have, but it does seem even more so now that they finally won it back in 2016. The Cubs hold a 2.5 game lead in the nl central at the break, which is a whole lot better than being behind 5.5 games like last year. I agree that the Cubs have not clicked on all cylinders in the first half. Hopefully, this is a good thing and a sign for the rest of the summer. Will the Cubs open up that nl central lead or will it be close all year long? It would be nice to open up a good size lead, but as long as they win the nl central and don’t have to play a 1 game playoff, I’m good with it. Home field at Wrigley throughout the nl would be nice, too. Enjoy the break Cubbies! GO CUBS GO!!!
