July 14, 2016: Who To Watch For Part 2

posted in: Cubs, White Sox | 1

We’ve talked about Bryant and Sale.  They are the 2 stars leading each of their teams.  We talked about Anderson and Heyward, and how they need to be big in the 2nd half to help their teams play more than 162 games.  Now let’s look at some pitchers; it’s who to watch for part 2.

I’m not worried about Jake Arrieta; am I the only one?  Yes, he hasn’t been quite himself lately, but geez… he set the bar so damn high.  People were dogging him for saying he didn’t want to pitch in the All-Star game… so what?  Part of me was kind of like WTF, but then, after thinking about it… after dipshit Terry Collins named Cueto the starter… after Jake got snubbed last year, put a historic 2nd half together, and a pretty damn good 1st half this year, and Cueto gets the start?  It was a shot by Collins for sure.  The one reason why I would want to face the Mets in the postseason is this idiot.  So Jake got pissed, and said screw you.  Good.  Get that chip back on your shoulder Jake, and shut them down this 2nd half.  Keep it on your shoulder and be that ace, leading us into the postseason, leading us to glory.  Screw Terry Collins and the Mets.

OK, I got that out of my system… now on to the pitcher to watch for.  I’m picking John Lackey.  Yes, another one of the Cubs offseason acquisitions.  He’s had a splendid first half; he struggled down the stretch just as every Cubs starter not named Kyle Hendricks.  My question with the pickup of Lackey was this guy’s age.  Could he put together another great year as he did last year in that craphole of a city?  I was questioning that in my head.  The one thing I didn’t question, is his value come postseason time.  And for that, it was a great pickup.  I’m just curious how he will hold up.  Will he be as effective in the 2nd half?  Will he be able to pitch 200 plus innings, and get us to the postseason, and be successful there?  That #3 starter is critical, especially come postseason time.  Will he be the man, or will the Cubs make a move for another starter in the next couple weeks?  Or will Hammel or Hendricks step up?  I think Lackey is key for us this 2nd half.

As for the Sox, we already talked about their ace.  We talked about Quintana a few days ago.  The guy to watch for here is the Sox #3 starter, and that is Carlos Rodon.  I liked him when the Sox drafted him.  I thought the Cubs would have taken him had the Sox not.  It worked out OK since the Cubs grabbed Schwarber right after him.  He showed flashes last year, with some control issues.  I thought if he got his control issues under control… haha… like that… he would have an outstanding year.   That hasn’t been the case thus far.  It needs to be the case if the Sox want to get to game 163.  You know what you got with Sale and Quintana.  What do you have with Rodon?  The answer is key to the Sox 2nd half success.

So there… a preview of the 2nd half… a look at some stars, and key contributing hitters and pitchers.  Maybe I should talk coaching and GM’s next.  Yeah, that sounds good.

For the sox, I agree with rodon. He is that #3 for the sox that can give them an advantage in the 2nd half. Control, location, control, location. Keys for every pitcher, especially a young talent like rodon.
For the Cubs, I am going with Jake. He seems tired. He wanted rest during the break. His control has not been there. I thought he would have a down year, but he proved me wrong most of the first half. The Cubs need him to be that ace. They need that confidence knowing whenever he is on the mound, they will win. Get back to being filthy Jake…and screw new york and everybody on that team.
