So which one is your favorite? This was a survey question on espnchicago. What is your favorite all-star activity across all the sports?
First off, the pro bowl didn’t even make consideration. Partly because there is no other events, like skill competitions, that accompany it. Secondly, for all the love football gets, who the heck watches the pro bowl?
Hockey does have activities, like hardest slap shot and fastest skater. I guess that’s pretty cool, but I don’t get into it. Remember, I’m all about the Hawks when it comes to hockey, and don’t watch much else.
Although nowadays basketball is treated the same way, bulls only, the all star activities are pretty cool. I like the 3 point competition. I remember Craig hodges winning a couple times. This is my 2nd favorite all star activity. The slam dunk ranks slightly behind that; it wasn’t always like that.

When Michael Jordan was in the mix, this was number one by far. As my son and I watch Michael Jordan YouTube videos, there’s one that may be watched the most: the slam dunk contests that MJ was in. It started in his rookie year at the 1985 game in Indianapolis. Damn, that’s 30 years ago! It was Jordan vs Dominique, with the human highlight film taking that battle. The next year Jordan had the broken ankle and didn’t participate. The 1987 game in Seattle came and he was back, except Dominique was hurt. Jordan put on a show and took out Jerome kersey in the finals. That setup 1988. They were both healthy. The rematch had arrived. It was truly a heavyweight battle; magnificent dunks back to back to back. The only problem for Wilkins, was this year the host city was Chicago, with the Stadium hosting. Yes, it could have went either way, but with 20,000 people going out of their mind with every Jordan dunk, no contest. You’re welcome Michael. Ha! Check it out when you get a chance. That was what all star weekend should be about.
Back to the final sport, and my favorite contest of all, the home run derby. Actually, yesterday may rank as my favorite. The new format was cool. No more taking pitch after pitch. No more 30 HRs in one round that took about 30 minutes. No, it was timed, and it pitted one player against another. I liked it. It helped that the Cubs had 2 reps. It helped that the home town hero won; I’m a sucker for that. Overall, watching guys hit the ball 400 plus feet over and over again, makes this my favorite.
What’s your favorite? What’s your favorite memory of an all star activity/competition? It’s great to watch the best in the world play, and pretty cool to see them participate in skill contests against each other. Too bad sometimes the best guys don’t want to participate. Either way, it’s still fun. Maybe one day I’ll actually attend one…

Home run derby is my favorite without a doubt. A few memorable ones for me would be from the steroid bros, big mac in boston and slammin sammy in wrigley north. Also, loved big hurt’s bomb in 3rivers!
