Ever been camping? I’ve been a few times, only once true, true camping, like sleeping in a tent; that was fun…. considering it was pouring outside, but… we were in a “good mood” so all good. Been in a camper a few times; that was more fun. Lots of drinking w/nowhere to go… yeah, I’m good with that. Not talking about this kind of camping today though; let’s talk about basketball camp.
My son has a pretty busy schedule, which is good; need to keep these kids busy. He’s currently in a day camp that runs from 9-3; he loves it. Who wouldn’t love playing for 6 straight hours? Do they have these types of camps for adults? I’m sure my job wouldn’t mind. He just finished his baseball season; there were some fun moments, but he was frustrated with his hitting this year. Just have to practice more, that’s all… but, we’re going to sit out fall baseball this year; that was his choice… I’m fine. Of course, he’s still swimming; practice is 4 nights per week… he makes a little more than half of the practices. And now, as if there isn’t enough going on, there’s more…
After baseball season ended, we were talking about what else he would like to do; he had mentioned he wanted to do something basketball. For all the sports he plays, bball is numero uno; he would play every day if he could, so… let’s look for something. I remember one of the dads mentioned a camp to me; I looked it up, and it just so happened to be starting the next day… perfect timing! I signed him up; it’s only 6 sessions… it began this week. There’s about 30 or so kids in a gym with 6 different hoops; they run a pretty cool operation, getting all the kids plenty of time with the basketball in their hands. The first day, they played a game where you had to make 6 shots in a row to move from one level to the next. Layup, short shot, little longer shot, free throw, and three pointer. My son cruised to level 3 where he ended up getting stuck. He made 5 in a row a couple times, and 4 in a row as well, but couldn’t get to that 6th shot in a row. He ended up finishing in Level 3; I know he was mad… he knows he could do better. They haven’t played that game again, but when they do… watch out!
The next day was more different types of games; this time, my son was on fire. He ended up winning two different trophies that day. The first one was due to him and his partner finishing up shooting at each basket before everybody, and the other was due to being the last one standing in a game they play before they finish up for the day. Each kid sits under a basket of their choice, while the coach rolls the dice. Depending on which basket you’re under, you may have to make a layup, free throw, or three pointer. My son was lucky the first couple times, having to make a bunny; he did. Bunch of kids got filtered out, then he had to make some other shots. It was down to 2 kids, and he got the unlucky roll; he had to make a trey to stay alive… bam! Sunk it! Next up was a free throw, which he made, while the other kid missed. Winner winner…
He loves basketball, and oh yeah, he’s pretty good at it too. After the 2nd session, coach comes up to me, and tells me that he should try out for their travel team…I just smiled and looked at my wife… here we go again! Adding more to the plate… haha. But out of everything, I’m sure he wouldn’t mind playing multiple games per week, with both school and his travel team… we’ll see… 4 more sessions to go…
