July 12, 2017: Second Half Hopes

posted in: Cubs, White Sox | 1

It has to be one of the quietest days of the year.  Nothing much going on in sports the day after the MLB All Star Game.  Sorry, the ESPYS don’t count.  Did you actually watch that?  I didn’t… I did see the 2016 Cubs win Moment of the Year or something like that… duh!  And no, we’re not counting summer league NBA basketball.  It appears that the Bulls will NOT go back to back with summer league titles…. duh!

No, it’s time for second half hopes.  As we sit at the unofficial halfway point of the season, what are your hopes for both teams?  I don’t think it’s a hard question concerning what we hope our teams do; the hard part comes with how we get there.

For the Sox it’s continue to focus on the rebuild.  Move as many pieces as you can, to keep getting younger, and stockpiling that farm system.  Losing games doesn’t necessarily hurt either, which leads to higher draft picks.  Yes, it’s full tank mode on the South Side; this is a good thing… trust me.

For the Cubs, it’s wake the F up time.  We’ve already officially recorded 2017’s first half of the season as a mulligan.  No more mulligans available.  It’s time to play better, win the central, and hope to be playing your best baseball come October.  Far fetched?  Maybe, based on the way they’ve played so far, but not based on what we’d seen from them the last couple years.

The Sox should look to trade Quintana, Robertson, and Frazier at a minimum; I’ve said this before.  What about Abreu?  It was kind of funny what Avisail Garcia had to say this week about the rebuild, and how the Sox prospects will be better than the Cubs.  First thing, those Cubs prospects have won a World Series, so there’s that.  To be better than the Cubs prospects, the Sox young bucks will need to bring a title home.  It can happen, but we’re still a few years from that.  Hey, I’d love to see the Sox make the World Series.  I’d love for them to play the Cubs.  Imagine the civil war that would take place.  By that time, it would be the older, veteran Cubs vs the young upstart White Sox… that is, if we’re targeting 2020.

But back to 2017 for a second… for the Cubs, starting pitching is the biggest need.  How do you fix the problem of not hitting with runners in scoring position?  Like I said, I know what I hope for, and what needs to be fixed… just don’t know how that happens.  Trust in Theo, Joe, and the defending champions is where I have to be.

I had fallen pretty far behind on my blog lately, but didn’t really think it would matter so much.  I mean, what is really going on in the world of Chicago sports that I need to write about right this second.  The All Star break provided a bit of a catch up window for me.  That is, until Thursday hit…  wow!  That’s next…  I’ll finally be caught up.

I actually watched much of the espys this year…go figure. Peyton was ok with some solid opening jokes, especially surrounding Durant. Cubs win moment of the year but nothing else…kind of surprised me. Not best game? Really? Best team? Somehow gsw wins that…bs.
The sox are in full rebuild. Get that young talent out of the minors and into the majors to face real big league competition…learning on the fly is the best way to do it.
The Cubs need to snap out of it. The days for it’s early, don’t worry, blah blah blah is over. Yes, there is still 75+ games to play, but they sit 5.5 games behind the brewcrew. Do not let this season pass. The hangover needs to end. Guys need to play better, both pitching and hitting. Let Joe and Theo manage the club. Winning a World Series gives us some confidence that usually is not there. Trust the talent. Trust the Cubs brass. Turn this thing around and come out of the gate hot. Time to get that Cubbie blue train rolling!
    GO CUBS GO!!!
